A Search for Analytic Authenticity and a Personal Voice:

Ethical and Clinical Considerations

Henry Markman explores the foundations of what it means to “be oneself” in doing ethically and clinically sound analytic work. He defines analytic authenticity as the singular way each analyst finds and brings their true nature in expressing love of the work, presence, and care while bound by the needs and subjectivity of each patient. Beginning early in his training, Markman noted that personal, unique qualities in supervisors and his analyst, in their way of being and relating, were therapeutic. Yet this aspect of analytic process fell outside any discourse on technique and was rarely mentioned. He wondered whether certain technical strictures might inhibit the analyst’s most lively and human ways of connecting. In tracking this development from experience with supervisors and his personal analyst through altering, expansive experiences with adolescent and adult patients and supervisees, he realized that how we are as analysts in the way we engage is personal and unique. This forms the human foundation for real therapeutic contact and a fundamentally ethical way of relating to another in our care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of analytic authenticity that encourages the clinician’s freedom to be more spontaneous and creative in ways that are therapeutically important.
  2. Utilize the idea of “presence” to be more aware of defenses in the analyst that block communication.
  3. Summarize how being more real, honest, and straightforward strengthens the patient’s sense of reality and avoids common forms of impasse.
  4. Describe the ethical dimension of authenticity, which enhances sensitivity to the patient’s responses to the clinician’s actual personality.
