Volume 5 No. 6| February 10, 2023

Notes from the Editor:

Without going into details (meaning I brought it on myself), I'll explain that I've been buried under a total computer meltdown since last weekend. Not the culmination, by any means, but an example of how it's been going: I decided to make the chaos an opportunity to upgrade and ordered a replacement from Apple. Yesterday, I was informed that Fedex had delivered it to Jensen Beach and it was ready for me to pick up. No more details required here; you get the drift. They sent it back to Apple, although it's still on my credit card. Oh, did I mention my Bellsouth address/emails disappeared from my backup computer? And I can't find my laptop, my backup to my backup. I packed it away for that last hurricane and apparently put it somewhere very safe. It might sound as though I'm complaining, maybe even whining, but things are actually going fairly well for a total disaster.

This morning, I'm planning to finish a particularly tasty cup of coffee while getting this puppy on its feet and out the cyber door.

On another note, I have a copy of The Killing of Innocents by Deborah Crombie to give away to an Arts Blast subscriber. If you've linked to this on Facebook or online, subscribe (it's free!), and follow these instructions.

Piecing It All Together Beautifully

It's time for the 2023 Vero Beach Quilt Show. Working on next weekend's event are more than twenty different committees, planning to make this Treasure Coast community event the best ever.

From the Vero Beach Quilt Guild:

Our two day event displays well over a hundred locally made quilts. These are separated into 15 categories and judged on color, craftsmanship, sewmanship, and beauty. There will be a “Quilts of Valor” presentation, Quilt Appraisals, Treasure Baskets, Entrepreneurs, Vendors, Boutique, and parking is free and plentiful at the Indian River County Fairgrounds.

The Theme is “Treasures of the Treasure Coast.”

A portion of the Quilt Show proceeds will benefit the Vero Beach non-profit organization: “Shining Light Garden Foundation,” (Shining Light Garden Foundation) a 20 acre vegetable and flower garden. For over 10 years, it has been supplying fresh food to Veterans, Food Pantries and the less fortunate members of the Treasure Coast. All harvesters are volunteers; all monies go into seeds, tools and equipment.

"We're getting ready for the Vero Beach Quilt Show 2023! ... Join us on Friday & Saturday from 10-4. $10 for both days. FREE PARKING! at the Indian River County Fairgrounds."

By Priscilla Speicher for SLC Arts magazine

If you haven’t yet visited HARMONY MUSIC LOUNGE and THE MERMAID ROOM Art Gallery / Event Space, you are in for a treat! This eclectic business opened in early July of 2022, and owner Priscilla has been diligently working to bring less common, high quality live music acts to her stage, as well as adorning the walls of both rooms with local Treasure Coast art.

The Music Lounge offers live music performances 6 nights a week, at a low entertainment fee of just $3! Every Tues. evening you can enjoy the world-class pianist, Uriel Natero, playing Classical, Ballads, Love Songs, Jazz Standards and Brazilian songs.

Weds. is always Piano Night featuring a great pianist. Thursdays, the Open Stage Open Jam draws anywhere from 6 to 14 area musicians and singers to the stage, performing solo and together. All ages and talents are welcome at this truly OPEN and informal Open Mic-style evening. Listeners wanted! J No entertainment fee on Thursdays. Fridays and Saturdays could find any style of act on stage – from Pop and Rock to Folk or Country. The schedule is always available on the website, HarmonyLiveMusic.com.

Sunday Afternoons are for PIANO, with great pianists performing from 2:30 to 4:30. On the 2nd and 4th Sun. of each month, the incredibly talented vocalist Muffy Charles takes the stage, doing RnB and Jazz hits spanning the decades, and a touch of older pop hits too! She is accompanied by fantastic saxophonist Gary Palmer. $10 charged by the performers for this special show. On the 1st and 3rd Sunday, local legend Will Vaughn performs his Soul Jam with sit in musicians and singers, 5:30 – 8.

Recently, THE MERMAID ROOM opened, located in the suite just behind the Music Lounge. This is extremely affordable Private Event Space that you can rent for any function, but it doubles as an Art Gallery, open in the evenings during Harmony’s Live Music shows. Also open Saturdays from 2:30 until late night (10:30 or 11 PM). Local art adorns the walls and you can also view the incredibly unique and beautiful work of Master Wood Turner Will Devito. Will makes custom crochet hooks, ink pens, bottle stoppers and openers, razors, and other gift items – on display in the Gallery.

If you’d like to see the Mermaid Room, just drop into Harmony Music Lounge during business hours: 6 to Midnight Tues. Weds. and Thursday. 2 to Midnight on Saturday. And 1:30 to 5 or later on Sundays (special evening shows run til 7:30 PM). Priscilla is a career event planner with 33 years of experience, and can help you plan any party, fundraiser, or gathering! The City of Fort Pierce’s 6th Annual Highwaymen Heritage Trail Art Show and Festival returns by popular demand this weekend on February 18, beginning at 10:00 am and located this year at 435 N. 7th Street in Fort Pierce. Featuring several of the living Original Highwaymen and succeeding generations, as well as other artists, live music, local cuisine, and more. As part of the Festival, the City is organizing a bus tour of the Highwaymen Heritage Trail, with the first stop here at the A.E. Backus Museum, where the story begins; advanced registration is required with tours beginning at 10:00 am, 12 noon, and 2:00 pm (space is limited). For more information and to sign up for the Heritage Trail tours, please visit https://www.cityoffortpierce.com/483/Highwaymen-Heritage-Trail-Festival.

The A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery will present its annual Highwaymen Celebration Weekend from Friday, February 17 through Sunday, February 19, 2023 during regular hours each day, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Friday-Saturday and 12:00-4:00 pm Sunday. Visitors to the Museum can enjoy a range of exclusive offerings, including viewing the special exhibition Dashboard Dreams: The Florida Highwaymen and the American Road. Admission will be free all three days, with activities outside and inside at 500 North Indian River Drive in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce.

The Highwaymen are a loose collective of Florida artists who learned landscape painting techniques and began a creative enterprise of selling their bold and rapidly-produced works of art to customers up and down the state’s Atlantic Coast and beyond from the trunks of cars. This movement started in Fort Pierce in the 1950s at a time in the racially segregated South when opportunities were limited for African Americans, yet they persevered and succeeded. In 2004, 26 of the original artists were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, and in 2016 the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American Culture and History opened with 18 Highwaymen paintings in its collection.

SEE THE FINAL WEEK OF THE SPECIAL EXHIBITION “DASHBOARD DREAMS: THE FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN AND THE AMERICAN ROAD”

Visitors to the Museum galleries will enjoy the latest in the annual series of special exhibitions recognizing this extraordinary movement. Dashboard Dreams presents more than 50 original paintings, including works from private collections never before seen by the public, that were painted at the same time the American auto industry was fashioning the postwar aspirations for car ownership. Using alluring advertisements targeted for the upwardly mobile, they depicted coveted designs and the promise of an enhanced lifestyle. This exhibition presents how their dreams of being self-sufficient artists on the road were bound together and realized through success. The special exhibition expands upon the permanent display of Highwaymen paintings on view, a display which includes video excerpts from the award-winning documentary film “The Highwaymen: Legends of the Road.”

The Museum will offer special gallery presentations on the Florida Highwaymen exhibition at 11:15 am & 2:15 pm Friday and Saturday; 1:15 pm & 3:00 pm on Sunday.

The Backus Museum’s annual fundraising raffle celebrating the importance of Florida Art has a special Highwaymen connection this year: the masterpiece offered is “Beautiful Morning,” 2005 by Sam Newton (b.1948), Original Highwaymen artist and inductee to the Florida Artist Hall of Fame in 2004. “Beautiful Morning,” 2005, eloquently captures the iconic beauty of Florida's wild and wide terrains, through the eyes of one of the original masters of the beloved and unique landscape painting tradition that began here. This exceptional work of art is valued at $6500, and will be awarded to the winning ticket holder on Sunday, March 5 at 12:30 pm (you do not have to be present to win). Only 2,500 tickets are available this year for $25 each, or three for $60, or six for $100 for the best deal and best chances! The Museum’s Highwaymen Celebration Weekend is an excellent time to exercise your luck for a good cause.
