Dr. Lusk To Lend Expertise in Statewide Conference
Prevent Child Abuse Illinois has invited The Baby Fold’s clinical director, Dr. Rob Lusk to return to their virtual conference this year. Dr. Lusk is a nationally known leader in trauma-informed care and treatment for children from hard places. His presentation entitled Trauma Treatment in a Time of Widespread Crisis, will focus on how to provide effective trauma treatment during our current pandemic. Words of wisdom for all of us from Dr. Lusk, “Self-care is a necessity right now. However, often it has to come in tiny doses. Take as many doses as you can. Give lots and lots of grace. Practice gratitude every morning and every night.” Well said, Dr. Lusk!
Kids and Parents Take-a-Break from Stress
The weather and setting were perfect for Camp Take-a-Break at East Bay Camp this fall. This weekend camp experience is created especially for kids who have been adopted. Children bond while having fun and reducing stress. It is also designed for their parents to have respite from the challenges that can come with adopting children from hard places. Camp Take-a-Break weekends happen year round because fresh air, exercise, play, and connection are vital to healing. Guided by staff who have expertise in trauma informed care, these adopted children can explore new experiences and new relationships in a safe and supportive environment!
Brothers Bless Others
Tristan and Nathan already know the joy of giving. With the intention of helping others, these two planted watermelon seeds in their grandfather’s garden. Then they waited, envisioning the blessings their harvest would bring to someone they may never know. Finally, it was time to pluck (heave?) the giant watermelons from the earth and begin selling them door-to-door throughout the neighborhood. The result? The boys sent some of their hard-earned proceeds to charities that they love. Tristan gave his earnings to The Baby Fold! Well done, young man. You're an example to others on how to intentionally sow seeds of generosity!

Your support through the purchase of beautiful Christmas trees, wreaths, centerpieces, gingerbread houses, gift baskets and more helps us reach 1200 children and families each year with education, guidance and support. The Festival experience might be different this year, but The Baby Fold mission is the same- to strengthen and encourage children and families to make our communities healthy and strong.
New Office in Champaign-Urbana
The Baby Fold’s office in Champaign has moved to Lincoln Square Mall. The space is now home to our Adoption Support Therapists as well as our Healthy Start team as they expand throughout Champaign County. Last year, the Healthy Start Team was able to help 136 families provide safe and loving homes for their babies. Prevention of abuse and neglect is a very important part of our mission. Even in homes where the mother may have had contact with DCFS in her home when she was young, we see the cycle of abuse broken in an astounding 96% of the families we serve. Beyond basic needs, families learn how to prepare for their child’s future. Each child receives developmental screenings to assess and address school readiness. 100% of the children served last year have a physician who can address their physical needs on a consistent basis, reducing the use of the ER for health visits. A healthy start in life sets little ones on a successful course to their best future!
