A Season of Gratitude and Giving | | |
Dear Colleagues,
Thanksgiving is almost here. While most of us have much to be grateful for, millions of people around the world struggle. Americans are very generous, to the point where donors are inundated with accounts of hurricanes, earthquakes, fires and medical emergencies. They receive repeated alerts and requests for financial assistance, including requests from political candidates. Donor fatigue can set in, making people reluctant to give.
I was recently interviewed by Anitra Johnson at Delaware’s News Journal, a Gannett publication, about the best ways to respond to the Jamaica hurricane relief. While I specifically addressed Jamaica, my remarks apply to any request, overseas or in the United States. Read the full article here.
Cash donations are always best. Money is fungible and can purchase supplies and equipment in bulk, often at much cheaper prices than individual donations. Food, medical supplies, generators, water treatment equipment or telecommunications gear and other supplies might be purchased locally without waiting for overseas supplies to arrive. Cash donations can be used to hire local staff, many of whom have lost their jobs, homes and possessions, or to purchase sea or air transportation for supplies. Highly trained crews are needed on site to restore power and telecommunications, water treatment and sanitation, or rebuild hospitals or roads to replace those destroyed by disasters. Airlines allow travelers to donate miles for relief personnel.
If you want to help, ensure the charity you choose is legitimate. Unfortunately, unscrupulous people are taking advantage of this tragedy. Protect yourself against scams at charitynavigator.org.
WTC Delaware collects donations for the Food Bank of Delaware. We accept contributions of goods and money at our events. Go to the Food Bank’s shopping list or its Amazon Wish List.
Our next event is the celebration of the ninth edition of International Delaware™ on December 11 at the WTC Delaware offices in New Castle. I have announced my retirement from World Trade Center Delaware on December 31 because I am getting married and will spend much of my time overseas. I have told the board that I will be available to help new leadership with the transition until June 30, 2026. Please attend our magazine celebration. I would love to say farewell to you.
