Stories of Health & Hope

ENGAGING OUR YOUTH WITH HEALTH CARE

SOS is leveraging its unique niche in healthcare education to bring students - from high school to medical school - together for engaging learning experiences.

Recently, SOS partnered with medical students from U of L’s College of Medicine’s Project HEAL to provide 65 Louisville high school students with the chance to experience medical school. They were led by medical students in hands-on learning experiences, including patient care techniques, operating room procedures, and medical diagnostics.

This past week, SOS brought together nursing students from ATA College and 10th grade Allied Health students from Iroquois High School for an innovative on-site program that simulated a nursing school experience. After participating in the hands-on skills labs led by the ATA students, 10th grader Maqsoda Hadi said, “It was so exciting to work with the ATA students. It definitely makes me want to go to nursing school."

BRINGING JOY TO CHILDREN IN NEED

Through a remarkable collaboration with Louisville Lighting, SOS was able to transform the life of young Everette by providing him with a specialized bike, enabling him to partake in joyful family bike rides around their neighborhood. This heartwarming connection has not only brightened Everette's world but also sparked the interest of physical therapists from Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), who visited SOS to seek support for children in need. This week they picked up 21 special needs pediatric mobility equipment items ensuring that children receive devices essential for their mobility and overall well-being. This partnership exemplifies the power of community collaboration in driving positive change for those in need.

LIFE CHANGING SURGERIES IN HONDURAS

Thanks to medical supplies provided by SOS, a medical mission team from Sharing Resources Worldwide was able to treat over 70 children including 31 who needed complex orthopedic surgeries. Ranging from six months to 19 years, these children were brought by families of which many traveled over 11 hours to receive treatment. “There were many casts and smiles throughout the week” reported Director Mary Dowling. “Thank you to SOS for your part in our efforts…its takes a village”.
