On the 3rd Friday of September each year, we observe POW/MIA Recognition Day, honoring and remembering the brave individuals who served in submarines during World War II and were captured as prisoners of war, including those who never made it home. These submariners, driven by a strong sense of duty, faced tremendous challenges – some enduring captivity in the line of service – with all making sacrifices for their country.

A Fresh Look at the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum recently completed renovations in which several exhibits were updated along with refreshed exterior signage, enhancing the visitor experience both inside and out. These updates bring even more life to the stories of the men and women who shaped the history of undersea warfare. Guests will discover new interactive features, detailed displays, and updated historical perspectives that connect World War II operations, the Cold War era, and today’s modern submarine force in engaging and meaningful ways.

Whether you’ve visited before or are planning your first trip, now is the perfect time to explore the USS Bowfin and the museum’s expanded offerings. The updated exhibits provide fresh insights, while the new signage helps guide visitors smoothly through the grounds, creating an experience that is both informative and inspiring. Come see history from a new perspective and honor the legacy of the U.S. Submarine Force right here at Pearl Harbor.

In partnership with the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation (DSF), the Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association (PFSMA) is proud to announce that DSF will administer the USS Bowfin Memorial Scholarship program for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The USS Bowfin Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a current or former qualified submariner, or their recognized spouse or child, according to the U.S. Department of Defense, who is seeking financial assistance for undergraduate education and vocational or trade certification. The application period for the Bowfin scholarships opens on October 1, 2025.

Family Ties Sail Aboard USS Bowfin

Earlier this month, we were honored to welcome the family of Elizabeth Doncaster. Elizabeth’s father, Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class William Michael Jordan, served on the USS Bowfin during its 7th, 8th, and 9th patrols. A photograph from the museum’s collection captures William standing under the black-and-white photo of the Bowfin, connecting the family directly to the submarine’s storied history.

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum takes great pride in welcoming the descendants of USS Bowfin’s crew. Their visits bring the submarine’s history to life, connecting generations through stories of courage and sacrifice. Each family that steps aboard honors the legacy of their loved ones, and the museum is deeply honored to serve as the place where that connection is remembered and celebrated.

After more than three decades of dedicated work with the Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association, Lana Vargas has retired. Her commitment to preserving submarine history and supporting our mission has left a lasting impact on PFSM and the visitors she warmly welcomed over the years.

Celebrating USS Tucson’s Birthday

On September 9, 1995, USS Tucson was commissioned as the 59th Los Angeles-class submarine. Earlier this month, PFSM, in partnership with the Navy League, had the honor of hosting Tucson families to celebrate the submarine’s birthday while the boat and crew are deployed in the Western Pacific. We wish Tucson continued mission success and look forward to welcoming them home at the end of their deployment.

At the time of her commissioning, the Los Angeles class was designed for a service life of approximately 30 years, striking a balance between rapid technological development and the durability of nuclear propulsion and submarine hull construction. Many of the 62 Los Angeles-class boats ultimately exceeded this lifespan through refits and life-extension programs, with 23 still in service today. With the USS Iowa (SSN 797) commissioned last April, there are now 24 Virginia-class submarines in service, representing a majority of the U.S. Submarine Force.

At PFSM, our Navy family members are always welcome. Visits like these help us honor the service, sacrifice, and legacy of our submariners.
