"Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding, the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated as birds' wings." — Rumi

Dear Suzanne,

Winters are rough for me. Here in New Hampshire, we recently endured nearly a week of subzero temperatures. Our furnace strained to keep up, and even sitting at my desk my hands would get so cold and pale they looked nearly bluish. I suspect my Dominican heritage (my mother was born in Santiago, Dominican Republic) makes me more prone to suffering from SAD, Seasonal Affect Disorder. Days and days of cold and gray sink me into the winter blues.

The other day, while running errands, I stepped into a pharmacy and was immediately surrounded by the warmth of Valentine's reds, pinks, and purples.

It was a simple moment, but the burst of color shifted something in me. Entering the profusion of warmth and color, I felt myself smile and my blue mood lifted. It reminded me of homeostasis, our body’s natural process of maintaining internal stability despite external conditions.

In essence it’s about finding balance.

Balance isn’t just biological; it’s essential in every aspect of life. When we’re out of sync, whether physically, emotionally, or mentally, we feel unsteady. Sometimes, the fix is simple—a meal, a nap, a deep breath. Other times, regaining equilibrium requires deeper reflection and action.

With love and light,

Suzanne

Sip of Serenity from Oasis in the Overwhelm

This month’s Sip of Serenity invites you to check in with yourself:

  1. Where am I out of balance? (Ask with compassion—this is about awareness, not judgment.)
  2. What conditions or choices have contributed to this imbalance?
  3. What do I need to restore balance?
  • A physical reset? Try a 4-D stretch or a 4-D Dump (Pg 55, "Oasis in the Overwhelm")
  • A small but nourishing change? (Drink a glass of water, get outside, breathe.)
  • A realignment of priorities? (Do my actions reflect what truly matters?)
