JUNIOR SAILING UPDATE

The first week of Junior Sailing was a huge hit with plenty of sailing, wind, games, lessons and laughs!

Week 1 saw 124 sailors taking part across 8 programs, ranging from 8-year-old Wetfeet to 17-year-old Race Team members. Thank you to our Head Instructor Sydney Rankin and all the coaches who made sure everything was well organized and full of energy for our first week of Summer 2024.

Also a big thank you goes out to Sarah Sackville for organizing the Alumni Race Day — the weather held up and the alumni edged out our current instructors to take home the Bruce Thomson Memorial Cup (see full recap below).

A couple of quick reminders:

  • Dock space is at a premium, so please remind your young sailors that they get valuable house points any time they boat pool!
  • Weekend racing takes place every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm just northeast of Eaglemount Island and is open to sailors of all skill levels.

Looking forward to more great sailing ahead...

Dave Anderson

Director, Junior Sailing

WEEKEND RACING UPDATE

Last weekend was the opening event with the Annual Alumni Instructors vs the Current 2024 Instructors Team Racing Challenge for the Bruce Thomson Memorial Cup. There was outstanding participation with 40 instructors of all ages. Sydney Rankin and the team of 2024 instructors had all the 420s rigged and ready for racing. The morning torrential rain passed, the sun came out and there were excellent wind conditions for the afternoon racing.

Team racing allows sailors to slow down other boats by forcing them to sail past marks or off the race course. Alumni James Sackville created a pin wheel at the leeward mark to allow the Alumni team to catch up. Atticus Kimsa’s solution was simply to not round the mark, resulting in disqualification. The 2024 instructors were desperate to catch up so some flew spinnakers, which was not allowed. Charlotte Chambers and Sophia Green had the best results and the 2024 team raced well. The unusual rules are that the last boat loses, so the Alumni were the 2024 Champions.

Rob Thomson once again hosted the dinner party and good times were had by all. Thank you to Sarah Sackville for organizing the event and Rob for hosting a fabulous dinner.

Weekend Races this weekend are both handicap races for all boats with the Viamede Cup Saturday and the Amik trophy Sunday, both starting at 1pm. See you on the water.
