Looking Up—Looking Ahead
There's lots of good news to share today!
Many of you will be happy to hear that the Carrie Carpool Cinema will be returning in 2021. Details and themes still need to be filled in, but you can look forward to more movies and evening experiences at the Carrie Blast Furnaces this year!
Go ahead and mark your calendars now—on Saturday, August 28, 2021, the
Alloy Pittsburgh exhibition will return to the Carrie Blast Furnaces with brand new, site-specific art installations created by local artists. This will be the fourth iteration of this much-anticipated, large-scale experience. It was
originally slated to occur in 2020. Check out works from
past exhibitions here.
We're also pleased to share that Rivers of Steel Arts has received a Creative Catalyst Grant from the PA Council on the Arts. The grant will support the New Kensington Mural Project, a partnership between Rivers of Steel, the city of New Kensington, local residents, and stakeholders in the business community. Through the creation of eight graffiti-style murals, this community project is designed to increase positive public awareness for local graffiti artists, attract new visitors, and establish a successful concept for using graffiti art to fight urban blight—a model that can be adopted by other communities across the state. Look for colorful updates on this project throughout the year!
And for fans of the
W.A. Young & Sons Foundry and Machine Shop, we're happy to report that the
fourth and final phase of restoration for this National Historic Landmark is nearly completed, made possible with support from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. When
Sunday Guided Tours resume in the spring, you can expect to see a new front façade!
In other funding news, we are excited to share that Rivers of Steel has just received a grant from the National Park Foundation that will allow for the re-examination of our organization’s strategic plan to ensure that diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) are addressed in every area of our operations, projects, and programs. This process builds upon efforts initiated in 2020.
