Biophilia, literally "love of life," is the word that describes our inborn attraction to living things. Our innate affinity to the natural world is not surprising, as our ancestral survival required an intimate relationship with plants and animals. No wonder that in times of stress we seek out green spaces and gardens for relaxation.


There is now substantial evidence that proximity to living things is not only a source of comfort, but also confers very substantial health benefitsincluding favorable changes to our DNA.
