July 2023

Dear Girls Inc. Supporters,

We are pleased to share with you our progress during our fiscal year which began last July. Your support and generosity made it possible for us to help girls excel and grow.

From July 2022 to June 30, 2023, we served 1,284 girls, ages 8 to 18.

  • We worked with girls from 35 school sites in 9 cities: Salinas, King City, Greenfield, Castroville, Seaside, Monterey, Soledad, Hollister, and Watsonville.

  • We hired and trained 26 high school girls as Youth Leaders to plan, facilitate, and evaluate the high school, middle school and summer programs.

  • 60 elementary school girls participated in a two-week summer camp in July 2021, developed knowledge and skills in media literacy, learned about building a positive body image, and engaged in nontraditional activities and adventures, including hands-on science activities.

  • 210 high school girls participated in a yearlong leadership/mentoring program.

  • 176 8th grade girls participated in a series of workshops on communication, teen health, healthy relationships, and avoiding risky situations.

  • 172 7th grade girls participated in a unique program that approaches substance-abuse prevention as a peer issue, using the positive influence of young people modeling healthy behaviors.

  • 354 4th and 5th grade girls participated in the second phase of the substance abuse prevention program, facilitated by 7th grade girls who had gained skills in leadership and public speaking.

  • 59 7th grade girls trained to become facilitators to elementary school girls and provided programming on decision-making, assertiveness, and communication skills.

  • 176 elementary school girls and their mothers/fathers or adult guardian participated in program providing health information and strategies for fostering open communication and mutual trust.

  • 51 incoming high school girls spent a week at UC Santa Cruz experiencing college life and setting educational goals.

Thank you for your continued support in our mission of inspiring all girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold!

100% of Senior Youth Leaders

will be attending college

In July 2022, we hired and trained 26 Youth Leaders to plan, facilitate, and evaluate our programs.

This program is unique to Girls Inc. of the Central Coast. Youth Leaders are graduates of ECHO, our mentoring and leadership program, who continue their leadership development by delivering programs to girls from elementary, middle and high schools, in their home communities. The Youth Leaders received training on how to read a curriculum, public speaking, facilitation, classroom management, conflict resolution, team building, how to work in a youth-adult partnership, job readiness, and mandatory reporting to Child Protective Services. They also met monthly for additional training and support from the staff and each other. The young women have opportunities to practice being leaders, role models, teachers, and mentors. These activities provide them with an income, valuable skills, practical work experience, training and support from Girls Inc. staff, and encouragement to pursue college and a professional career.

Program Outcomes:

  • 100% demonstrated facilitation and public speaking skills
  • 100% demonstrated skills in team building and decision-making
  • 100% demonstrated skills in working in partnership with others
  • 100% articulated the value of being role models to other girls and of giving back to their communities

100% Senior Youth Leaders will be attending college: Hartnell College, UC Davis, Cal Berkeley, UCLA, Sacramento State, UC Santa Barbara, CSU Chico, and Anglo American University.
