A 96-Point Pinot Grigio?

Yep. And it will redefine how you think about this classic Italian grape.

The talented team at Schiopetto has done the impossible. They have crafted a wine from the Pinot Grigio grape that is so rich, full, complex and delicious you may find yourself wiping a little tear from your eye after your first few sips.

Loaded with baked apple, pear and peach flavors, the 2017 Schiopetto is full-bodied, profoundly nuanced and clean as a whistle. In the 2017 vintage, James Suckling tasted 123 bottlings of Pinot Grigio from around the world. Standing alone at the top of the list is the Schiopetto Collio Pinot Grigio!

At $23.79, this 96-Point white is one of the least expensive wine in Schiopetto's premium tier. The quality-to-price ratio is simply fantastic!  It is among the best Italian whites we've had over the past year, and one you absolutely will want to try for yourself.

2017 Schiopetto  Pinot Grigio
Collio, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
Utilizing their exceptional vineyards in the Collio region, Schiopetto is redefining the quality potential of Italian white wine. We were lucky enough to host a dinner with them back in 2018, and we held it at Spiaggia. Think about that, a producer of Italian whites hosted at Spiaggia, one of the most lauded Italian restaurants in the country!

Full, rich and super complex, today's bottling comes from their stunning property in the cru of Capriva. As mentioned above, it has earned a 96 point review from James Suckling and was picked by him as the best Pinot Grigio of the entire 2017 vintage from Italy and around the world, even topping a rare Napa Valley Pinot Grigio bottling from Massican.

The wine is extremely aromatic and once you pour it in your glass, you will want to dive right in. The flavors are rich and all-enveloping, with distinct notes of baked apple and pear, peach pie, savory herbs and a cascade of minerals that help the wine finish incredibly clean. We paired our bottle with roasted Italian lemon chicken and it was out of this world delicious!

Out of 123 Pinot Grigios tasted by James Suckling from the 2017 vintage, this Collio bottling from Schiopetto stands alone as the single most highly rated. He writes...

"This is one of the best pinot grigios of the year. Fantastic density and richness with cooked peaches, sliced apples, pears and minerals. Full-bodied, very layered and beautiful. A benchmark for pinot grigio from Italy. Drink now."
- 96 Points, James Suckling (1/22/2019)

"The floral aromas are so enticing with rose petals and lavender, which follow through to a full body with beautiful density of fruit. A long and complete finish. The best Chianti Classico ever made here in living memory. Even better than the 1961. Drink or hold."
- 98 Points, James Suckling (1/22/2019)

"This is racy, taut and intense, with cherry, black currant and blueberry flavors fused to a severe structure. Shows mineral and black pepper details as this rides out the refreshing finish. Give this some time. Best from 2022 through 2045."
- 93 Points, Wine Spectator (10/15/2019)
