Background on the Gospel Reading

We read today’s Gospel in the context of last week’s Gospel in which Jesus sent the twelve disciples to proclaim the kingdom of heaven. In between last week’s reading and today’s reading, Jesus has predicted that the disciples will face difficulties in their mission. Many people will not receive them well, even within the land of Israel. Even family members will turn away from the disciples because of the disciples’ commitment to Jesus and the kingdom. Today’s Gospel offers the disciples consolation against this difficult truth.

This section of Matthew’s Gospel should be read in the context of Matthew’s intended audience, a Jewish-Christian community. The Gospel alludes to the dangers and persecutions that this community has most likely already faced and will continue to face. To reassure this community, Matthew recalls for them the encouraging words of Jesus that we read today.

In this Gospel passage, Jesus might be understood as putting suffering in perspective. The disciples of Jesus are called upon to keep their focus on God. Those who can harm the body do not have ultimate power; God does. Still persecution and suffering can not be avoided or prevented. But Jesus reassures his disciples that God knows and cares about what happens to his children.



We might not face the same type of persecution, but we do experience difficulties as we endeavor to live a Christian life. Sometimes we let the opinions of others prevent us from doing what we know to be right. We need the reminder that what God thinks about us is more important. We are reassured by the promise that God cares for us and protects us.

Family Masses Continue Through Summer

We will continue our monthly Family Mass during the summer months. The next Family Mass will be on Sunday, July 9 at 9:00 am. As always, the homily will address young children and we try to create a family-friendly environment. Plan to join us!

Youth Ministry Office Closed

The youth office is closed June 19 – July 4 while the youth ministry staff attends the annual leadership camp with our youth core team. The youth office will reopen Wednesday July 5.

We are here to support parents in forming their children in the Catholic Faith and help them connect to our parish community where we worship and grow in our faith together. We offer weekly classes for preschool through 8th grade and preparation for the sacraments for children in grades 1 through 8.

Let the Little Ones Come

to Me!

In the summer months we offer Liturgy of the Word for Children during the 9:00 am Mass. Children ages 5-9 that attend Mass with their family have the opportunity to hear the Word of God in language they can understand and reflect on in their own words. 

Following the Opening Prayer of the Mass, the presider calls forth the children, and we send them along with the adult catechist to the church basement classroom. The catechist will proclaim the readings from the Lectionary for Masses with Children, a translation that is more comprehensible to young children and approved by the US Catholic Conference of Bishops. The children will discuss how to share the good news with others. 

They will be brought back to their family at the time of the Preparation of the Gifts to continue the celebration of the Eucharist with the entire assembly.

En marzo de 2022, como todas las parroquias de la Diócesis, realizamos una serie de sesiones de escucha. Se les pidió a las personas que compartieran sus alegrías y sus esperanzas para nuestra parroquia. Todos los aportes fueron resumidos y enviados a la Diócesis. El comité diocesano resumió los aportes de todas las parroquias. En última instancia, todos estos pensamientos y sugerencias han llegado al Sínodo de la Iglesia que tendrá lugar en Roma este otoño.

En ese momento, el cardenal McElroy también expresó el deseo de que cada parroquia echara un vistazo a estos valiosos conocimientos que compartieron los feligreses y determinar cómo la parroquia puede abordar las necesidades expresadas y aprovechar los éxitos logrados. Respaldé firmemente esta sugerencia como una buena manera para que nosotros, como parroquia, planifiquemos nuestro futuro.

Recientemente, convoqué a un pequeño comité de planificación de feligreses y personal para profundizar más en la sabiduría que compartieron los católicos de toda la diócesis durante el proceso del sínodo. Estoy muy agradecido con el comité que trabajó muy duro para discernir los siguientes objetivos:

• Continuar brindando celebraciones litúrgicas de calidad como expresión de la fe de la comunidad.

• Desarrollar formas de atraer y retener a más familias para rejuvenecer el futuro de la parroquia y la Iglesia.

• Promover la Formación en la Fe a través de las generaciones con un enfoque familiar particular.

• Continuar desarrollando actividades comunitarias que incluyan a todos los grupos de edad, orígenes culturales y nuestra escuela.

• Desarrollar un ministerio para y con los jóvenes adultos.

• Para enfatizar el desarrollo de liderazgo entre los feligreses.

• Construir puentes entre las diversas comunidades culturales de St. Pat's organizando eventos de desarrollo comunitario que sean tanto de naturaleza social como espiritual y educativa.

• Continuar haciendo todo lo necesario para proporcionar un entorno seguro para los menores y otras personas vulnerables mediante la implementación cuidadosa de todos los protocolos existentes y futuros.

Para cada uno de estos objetivos, el comité también sugirió una serie de estrategias que brindan algunas formas de lograr los objetivos. Intentaremos implementar estos objetivos no solo este año sino durante algunos años por venir.

Oren conmigo para que el Espíritu Santo continúe guiándonos como parroquia mientras miramos con confianza hacia el futuro y construimos nuestra comunidad de fe.
