A Word from the Pastor

June 23, 2023

Back in March 2022, like all the parishes of the Diocese, we held a series of listening sessions. People were asked to share their joys as well as their hopes for our parish. All of the input was summarized and sent to the Diocese. The diocesan committee summarized the input from all the parishes. Ultimately, all these thoughts and suggestions have made their way to the Synod of the Church that will take place in Rome this Fall.

At that time, Cardinal McElroy also expressed a wish that each parish take a look at these valuable insights that were shared by parishioners and determine how the parish can address the needs expressed as well as build on the successes achieved. I strongly endorsed this suggestion as a good way for us as a parish to plan for our future.

Recently, I convened a small planning committee of parishioners and staff to delve more deeply into the wisdom that was shared by Catholics from across the Diocese during the synod process. I am very grateful to the committee who worked very hard to discern the following goals:

  • To continue to provide quality liturgical celebrations as expressions of the faith of the community.

  • To develop ways to attract and retain more families to rejuvenate the future of the parish and the Church.

  • To promote Faith Formation across generations with a particular family focus.

  • To continue to build on community activities that include all age groups, cultural backgrounds, and our school.

  • To develop a ministry to and with young adults.

  • To emphasize leadership development among parishioners.

  • To build bridges among the diverse cultural communities of St. Pat’s by hosting community building events that are both social in nature as well as spiritual, & educational.

  • To continue to do all that is necessary to provide a safe environment for minors and other vulnerable persons by carefully implementing all existing and future protocols.

For each of these goals the committee also suggested a number of strategies that provide some ways to achieve the goals. We will be trying to implement these goals not only this year but for some years to come.

Please pray with me that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us as a parish as we confidently look to the future and build up our community of faith.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

A Cathedral Organ in Buffalo

There is a beautiful cathedral in Buffalo NY, and one of its beautiful features is a wonderful pipe organ. It was fully restored in recent years. It even includes chimes which are highlighted in this video.

The cathedral itself was fully renovated in recent years. The video also offers a glimpse of some of its beauty. Enjoy this short presentation.

Catholic Trivia

"Catholic Trivia”... not because they are trivial but because these might be things that not everyone knows. Test your knowledge by reading the five questions, remember your answers (or jot them down), then click the link below to find the answers.

  1. In the Catholic Bible, how many books are in the Old Testament?
  2. How many books are there in the Pentateuch?
  3. On the road to what city did the conversion of St. Paul take place?
  4. Before his conversion, Paul was involved with the death of which person who is considered the first Christian martyr?
  5. To which Christian communities did St. Paul write more than one letter (of the ones that are preserved in the Bible)?

Gospel Reading

Matthew 10:26-33

Jesus assures the Twelve that God cares about them.

Background on the Gospel Reading

We read today’s Gospel in the context of last week’s Gospel in which Jesus sent the twelve disciples to proclaim the kingdom of heaven. In between last week’s reading and today’s reading, Jesus has predicted that the disciples will face difficulties in their mission. Many people will not receive them well, even within the land of Israel. Even family members will turn away from the disciples because of the disciples’ commitment to Jesus and the kingdom. Today’s Gospel offers the disciples consolation against this difficult truth.

This section of Matthew’s Gospel should be read in the context of Matthew’s intended audience, a Jewish-Christian community. The Gospel alludes to the dangers and persecutions that this community has most likely already faced and will continue to face. To reassure this community, Matthew recalls for them the encouraging words of Jesus that we read today.

In this Gospel passage, Jesus might be understood as putting suffering in perspective. The disciples of Jesus are called upon to keep their focus on God. Those who can harm the body do not have ultimate power; God does. Still persecution and suffering can not be avoided or prevented. But Jesus reassures his disciples that God knows and cares about what happens to his children.

We might not face the same type of persecution, but we do experience difficulties as we endeavor to live a Christian life. Sometimes we let the opinions of others prevent us from doing what we know to be right. We need the reminder that what God thinks about us is more important. We are reassured by the promise that God cares for us and protects us.

Let the Little Ones Come

to Me!

In the summer months we offer Liturgy of the Word for Children during the 9:00 am Mass. Children ages 5-9 that attend Mass with their family have the opportunity to hear the Word of God in language they can understand and reflect on in their own words.

Following the Opening Prayer of the Mass, the presider calls forth the children, and we send them along with the adult catechist to the church basement classroom. The catechist will proclaim the readings from the Lectionary for Masses with Children, a translation that is more comprehensible to young children and approved by the US Catholic Conference of Bishops. The children will discuss how to share the good news with others.

They will be brought back to their family at the time of the Preparation of the Gifts to continue the celebration of the Eucharist with the entire assembly.

Fr. Ron
