Engaging, Enriching, and Empowering All Students through a World-Class Education

#NHSSD Summer eNews

Summer Edition

We are excited to share the many ways #NHSSD is advancing learning and connecting with our local community this summer. We also invite you to explore some exciting community programs coming up!

Building a B.R.I.D.G.E.

Students in our Extended School Year program have been participating in community-based instruction to maintain and build upon their progress from the previous school year. Picking garlic at Roots to River Farm and onions at Chickadee Creek Farm for Rolling Harvest Food Rescue and visiting the local Giant for food preparation practice are some examples of the real-world, service-learning opportunities we have facilitated in partnership with local businesses and organizations.

Be a BRIDGE Partner

As we continue our efforts to meet the needs of all students, we are delighted to announce the upcoming launch of our NHSSD BRIDGE program, which stands for Becoming Responsible Independent Dependable Gainfully Employed Adults. This post-secondary educational program for students with developmental disabilities ages 18-21 will prepare them for daily independent living, gainful employment, and to engage in meaningful social and recreational experiences throughout their lives.

If your business or organization is interested to facilitate an opportunity for our students to develop their vocational skills while supporting your general operations, please contact Rory Yerkes at ryerkes@nhsd.org. A sample of previous work site activities include shredding, watering plants, stocking shelves, filing, sorting items, and folding. There are many possibilities, and we welcome a chance to explore this further with our community partners.

The Learning Continues

Students Progress in our Summer Academy

Our Summer Academy program helps students maintain and advance their knowledge of reading and math during the summer break. For grades K-2, students are reviewing letter identification, sight words, and reading with expression to enhance their literacy skills, phonemic awareness, and reading comprehension. Ongoing practice in number identification, number sense, measurements, and comparing quantities is helping them to build fact fluency and mathematics strategies. The students participate in games, such as the BINGO game pictured here, and work in small groups to keep the learning fun! Our educators have also found ways to connect all of the participating Summer Academy students, such as giving the older students the chance to read to their younger peers. Shared teacher Mrs. Strassler, "I see so much growth from these students during the summer session. They are maintaining their skills and performing them even faster. It makes a huge difference."

Getting Ready for College Essays

Mrs. Reeder and Mrs. Soriano hosted a summer workshop for students preparing to write college application essays. The students participated in a series of writing exercises to help them brainstorm essay topics and to consider the descriptive details they might include. The students also received key advice from college admissions counselors, reviewed strategies for tackling supplemental essays, and were provided time to draft their essay and to conference about it. A second workshop will be available for students on Wednesday, August 3.

Celebrity Reader Series with Mr. Brosious

Our Celebrity Reader Series continued with Upper Elementary School Principal Mr. Brosious sharing stories with children at the Free Library of New Hope and Solebury this month. Mr. Brosious led a discussion of Chris Van Allsburg's The Stranger, shared poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends, and let the audience choose his final selection, The Day the Crayons Quit. We look forward to continuing the series with sessions featuring Lower Elementary School Principal Mrs. Bloom and Superintendent Dr. Lentz.
