Finding our Way Back to the Business
of Hosting Events and Programs.
Thank you for opening our 5th newsletter from the Northport Arts Association. It is a delight to see the percentages of readers who engage with our messages and respond to our events!
We begin our newsletter with very sad news of the passing of one of our beloved friends. An artist who has graced this area for many years. Judy Rantz will be remembered for her incredible art, her loving way and the many memories we have of her. We will be commemorating her life and will announce our plans shortly.
This month is like most, our newsletter is filled with plenty of news as we find ourselves exceptionally busy as we get back to the business of hosting events and programs.
Our plates are full with Plein Air, Art Classes, Starry Night Art Show and perhaps the most special on our minds is the Starry Night Gala, August 11, 2021 from 6-9P. It is the first Gala in our history as we reach out to our members to come celebrate our advances and support our worthy causes.

Northport Plein Air Paint Out & Wet Paint Sale
The Northport Arts Association is celebrating their ninth Plein Air Event with a Wet Paint Sale reception on July 23 and 24, 2021, 6-8pm.
This year we are happy to welcome 50 artists that will paint throughout the tip of Leelanau Peninsula and the Village of Northport. The artists capture the beauty of our village, beaches, marina, orchards, vineyards, landscapes and landmarks. Yes! Northport is abundant with outstanding painting opportunities.
In 2013, when Gene Rantz organized artists to come to Northport and paint – au plein air, it was the beginning of a weekend tradition of outstanding creativity. The Paint Out started out with a small number of artists and the sale of freshly painted artwork in a tent in Haserot Park. The plein air event was a hit and over the next three years more artists joined in. Then in 2016 it was held at the Willowbrook Mill in Northport. Local eateries donated unique dishes, the Willowbrook was packed with guests, and the artwork was almost a sellout.
In 2016, Bill and Nina Collins built and established the Village Arts Building (VAB) which became the home of the Northport Arts Association. In 2017, Gene Rantz and John Mitchell promoted our first Plein Air Paint Out Exhibit and Wet Paint Sale at the Village Arts Building. The Northport Arts Association hosted 40 artists and filled the walls with original paintings from the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula. The VAB was filled to capacity with artists and guests and sales were outstanding. It’s wonderful to see people enjoy viewing and purchasing freshly painted one of a kind artwork.
Today, Northport’s Plein Air Paint Out continues to be a popular event in Northern Michigan. In 2020 the event had to be virtual. We missed having the artists come to the Village of Northport to paint. This year we are looking forward to seeing artists that have been painting with us over the years return and excited to meet new artists that have discovered our event. Their participation and the purchases of their artwork help support the operation of the Northport Arts Association. You can see a list of participating artists at northportartsassociation.org
Tickets are available online through Northportartsassociation.org. Tickets are $10 (plus processing fees) online or $15 at the door. Artists that are painting throughout the area will have a limited number of $5 off coupons to give to people interested in coming to the receptions.
After the Paint Out receptions on July 23 & 24 there will be an online gallery exhibit from July 25 to 31. Although having the ability to set up a gallery online was a life saver for our organization last year, it is nothing like seeing the artwork in person. We encourage people to come to the July 23 & 24 receptions for the best chance to see and purchase the locally created one of a kind art.
We are also very thankful for the support of the following organizations: Leelanau Community Township Foundation, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Northwest Michigan Arts & Culture Network and National Endowment for the Arts.
