Holiday Turkeys

Watch the session for insight into food security in Fort Worth, Texas; Duluth, Georgia; and our newest site in the Bronx, New York.

The morning of the Telethon, November 23rd, a man was sitting in his car in the parking lot of the mosque where our Willingboro, New Jersey food distribution happens each month. He was waiting, not realizing that this month’s distribution had already happened last weekend. The team gave our turkeys that week, and this man was really hoping to have a turkey for Thanksgiving. Our Deputy Director of Food Security, Waqas Asghar, went into the storage area and, luckily, we had just a handful of turkeys left to give away. The man said that we had made his Thanksgiving this year 🦃.

The Willingboro team has been helping people for 12 years, making many happy holidays for local families.

Health and Eye Care in Guatemala

Saifra Khan, a prior Country Director for Guatemala, shared her story. "Our Gift of Health missions are mobile clinics set up temporarily …. we had a small boy come with his family. He had a very rare skin condition, there is no cure to it. This boy had blisters, painful blisters, on his face, on his legs, on his hands, all over his body… This is unfortunately something that we could not provide at a makeshift clinic, but we were able to provide them with some resources and support them to get some care…. That moment really reminded me how important it was for us to have these short-term camps and shift them into something long term and sustainable through Humanity First."

HF’s Nasir Hospital now provides that long-term care, and Gift of Health missions to Guatemala still connect patients to treatment and resources. Hear more from Saifra and Dr. Asima Bajwa about how our work evolved in Guatemala and how you can help enact big plans to save people’s sight at Nasir Hospital!

Eye care and much more at Nasir Hospital

The world of Humanity First is full of connections.

Dr. Ahsan Khan was a resident at Loyola. When Dr. Khan began to lead Gift of Sight missions to Guatemala, he reconnected with Dr. Charles Bouchard of Loyola Medicine (pictured), who has now been an integral part of the Gift of Sight program for years. He formalized a partnership between Loyola and Nasir Hospital to grow our Ophthalmology work into new directions like cutting edge artificial intelligence and data analysis.

Watch the session to see the full design on the cupcake behind Dr. Bouchard, baked by the chef at Nasir Hospital for April’s Gift of Sight mission team 🧁.

Kids for Humanity

What do a teddy bear, a badge, a water bottle, a plaque, and a school book have in common? Ehtesham, Qasid, Muhammad-Jahid, Safiya, Aroosha, and Asad brought these items for a show-and-tell about HFUSA to share how Kids for Humanity work to serve others. Watch the recap to find out what each item means!

Muhammad-Jajid told us about local service projects like putting together food bags and backpacks for families in need in their communities, and Qasid encouraged all kids to visit https://humanityfirstusa.org/kids-4-humanity/ to join.

Youth Coordinators Najam, Sara, Faris, and Shanze are ready to welcome new children into their local Kids for Humanity chapters!

Crisis in Gaza

Hear more about the conditions and response in Gaza during the Disaster Relief segment of the Telethon.

"Access to water is essentially non-existent. The infrastructure has been destroyed. "

Dr. Aziz Hafiz of Humanity First UK tells of the daily work under an HF global partnership to provide relief within the devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Humanity First trucks water to camps in coordination with the United Nations. We have provided over 2 million liters of clean, desalinated, fresh water to internally displaced people.

Our team, like everyone else in Gaza, has been displaced 6 times - this is the context of our volunteers and team bravely working in Gaza.
