Friends,

Last weekend, I was grateful to attend Easter Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Sean O'Malley, OFM. I was struck when reflecting on Jesus' Resurrection and transformation that BC High is indeed in a time of transformation as well. In this Ignatian Year, along with Jesuit schools around the world, we are challenged to "see all things new in Christ" and to reflect on our own "cannonball moments" - times of transition and transformation in our lives that allow us to see Christ more fully.

This was never more present than at our annual PASE Conference in Philadelphia a few weeks ago when board chairs, presidents, principals, mission directors, and Jesuit superiors from the USA East Province joined together to discuss our schools and our way of proceeding. We were blessed to hear from terrific speakers throughout the four-day conference. Very Reverend Joseph O'Keefe, SJ, USA East Provincial was on hand to celebrate mass for the group which was inspiring and profound. In particular, we were struck by the words of Fr. Richard Baumann, SJ who reminded us of the Jesuit Constitutions and how relevant they remain in our schools today. Fr. John O'Malley, SJ shared his wisdom in very practical ways often discussing the the personal nature in which we should carry ourselves in order to lead our schools and form our students. A favorite line from Fr. O'Malley was "get the fly out of the bottle -- get our kids to step above the daily work and look to a wider world."

Certainly, one of the most transformational moments for BC High was the announcement of a $49 million gift from the Patrick F. Cadigan Family Foundation to build a wellness center bearing his name. The energy and excitement at the event was palpable. We hope to break ground in winter 2023.

The last month has been jammed packed with excitement and transformational moments for our students and community. Six of our students immersed themselves in an intensive trip to study the modern civil rights movement through the Sojourn Project. We watched as the basketball team won a state championship, going undefeated for the first time since 2007! The hockey team was the cinderella story right up until the semifinal losing a heartbreaker to St. John's Prep. Individually, there was success form our winter student-athletes as well.

Our Robotics team competed in several regional events and made us proud as they brought home the spirit award! Further, I was in awe of the Dever Players at the METG State One Act Competition with their performance of Hope is the Thing with Feathers written by Richard Harrity and directed by Adrian Hernandez. The talent among our students and faculty is nothing short of inspiring!

Lastly, I am thrilled to share that students, faculty, and staff are once again exploring, serving, and being transformed through experiences around the world. Trips to the Dominican Republic, Camden, NJ and Ireland are underway. I'll have more to share next month. Join me in keeping them in your prayers.
AMDG,

Grace Regan P'12
Thank you, Patrick F. Cadigan '52 Family Foundation!
On April 7, I was joined by Maria Cadigan, daughter of the late Patrick Cadigan '52, the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students to share the excitement of a transformational $49 million gift to BC High.

This gift is not just an investment in a physical space here on campus, but an investment in the formation of generations of young men. To be used solely for a capital building project, we are profoundly grateful for Pat and his family’s enduring commitment to supporting student health and wellness. The Wellness Complex will continue to deepen our approach to relational teaching and learning, enhancing both the philosophical and physical aspects of a Jesuit, Catholic education.

The Patrick F. Cadigan '52 Family Foundation Wellness Complex will be a 50,000 square foot space with two separate entrances (East Entrance, adjacent to Walsh Hall and the Arrupe Divistion and the West Entrance, adjacent to the McNeice Pavillion and the Bulger Performing Arts Center). The Cadigan Complex will feature a 6,200 square foot state-of-the-art strength and conditioning area; a 3,700 square foot cardio space; a 1,000 square foot athletic training center; and an eight lane, 25 meter pool with 1 meter and 3 meter diving boards. It will also include a flexible classroom space, complete with a wellness kitchen, to help BC High students learn about and incorporate healthy, nutritious foods into their active lifestyles. Construction is anticipated to begin in January 2023.

PASE Leadership Conference in Philadelphia
A wonderful few days spent with colleagues from around the USA East Jesuit Province. It was terrific to be together again in person. Fr. O'Malley, SJ shared is sage advice with the crowd. He's a true treasure in our network and I was blessed to spend so much time with him.
The Sojourn Project
I am so proud to share that six students and five adult members of the community traveled to several key sites of the modern civil rights movement at the end of March. In the week-long intense, transformative experience, students and staff explored, reflected, and deepened their understanding and appreciation for their own personal and civic responsibility.

As described on their site, "Sojourn Project is a wholly unique, transformative academic, moving classroom immersion program, and a catalyst for humanity."

Athletics Round-Up -- Celebrating our State Champs and more!
What a winter season in and around the Boulevard! The basketball team capped off a remarkable season going 25-0 to win the state championship in front of thousands of fans at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. The support from the students made the games electric and it was such a joy to see the excitement on their faces.

We were sad to see the hockey team fall short to St. John's Prep in the MIAA semi-finals after playing their hearts out throughout the playoff run. They made us proud with their resilience and fight to the very end. We'll get them next season!

The Patriot Ledger had a terrific piece on our Ski Team, led by Coach Ryan Dacey. The team has not lost a Ski East (our league) race since 2015. An amazing feat given their schedule and travel.

There might not be a team as excited about the Patrick F. Cadigan '52 Wellness Center as the swimming & diving student-athletes. With no set "home pool," these young men continue to find success in the water with team and individual Catholic Conference awards while having a very respectable showing at the state level as well.

We congratulate the winter student athletes, coaches, parents, and fans as we look to cheer on the spring sports!
Corcoran Living Library Lecture Series Presents:
Jason Reynolds
On March 25, the BC High community was delighted to hear from our all-school-read speaker, Jason Reynolds. Following the event, he was able to interact on a deeper level with the S.O.A.R. students which was an enriching experience for all. Parents joined us in person and virtually as a way to continue their work on helping BC High strive to be an anti-racist and inclusive community.

We are grateful to the Corcoran Family for the opportunity to bring speakers and dynamic presenters to engage with our students, faculty, and staff.

Robotics Competition
The Robotics team "Schroedinger's Cat" has had a busy winter and spring as they built, tested, and competed with their robot. A note from their moderator, Jenny Ehalt, "with persistence and successful problem solving, our team made it through the 79 qualifying matches and into the playoffs. We were the captain of team 8, enabling us to select the other teams we would form an alliance with. Unfortunately, we were knocked out of the playoffs after two matches, and at the end of day we missed qualifying for the District Championship by just 2 points. However, the team did win the spirit award for their passionate cheers and safety green colored hair and faces in the stands." We're proud of the students and all they accomplished this season!
Dever Players
The Dever Players had a wonderful run in the METG Finals at North Reading High School on Saturday April 2 with their performance of Hope is the Thing with Feathers written by Richard Harrity and directed by Adrian Hernandez. Unfortunately, the students did not place, but we did have four individual awards on the day though. We are so proud of their accomplishments and the hard work, dedication, and commitment of the faculty and staff that helped them along the way. Special thanks to Adrian Hernandez & Owen Tinti-Kane for their guidance and support of these wonderful actors.

  • Tim Cole-French '22 Excellence in Acting for his portrayal of Old Man Nelson (Tim's second individual award during the tournament)
  • Damian Harrison '23 Excellence in Acting for his portrayal of Wiler
  • Connor Rizvi '23 Excellence in Acting for his portrayal of Doc

  • Brayden Larnard '22, Charlie Murphy '23, Grady Louvar '23, Cody McManus '23, Conor Flaherty '24, Liam Fitch '25, Cate Healey AWHS '22, and Julia Ormond NDA '23 also represented BC High with great performances and work on the day and during the entire tournament.
BC Hire: Career Connections
BC Hire Career Connections has become a terrific program for our young alumni. This year, we have welcomed back alumni speakers to in-person luncheons for our current students as well. These programs help strengthen the alumni network and set BC High apart from other schools.

BC Hire Career Connections supports BC High’s current students and young alumni in securing meaningful summer jobs and internships, laying the groundwork for career success. Many of these internship opportunities are provided by the powerful BC High Alumni Network and our highly engaged parent community, while others are offered by firms in Greater Boston.
