March 17, 2020
Dear Friends,

Does anyone share the desire to turn off the television, put down the newspaper, and slip into the wool room? Could there be a better time to give ourselves over to making a rug? Let's all do that, shall we?

But first, take a minute to scroll and savor our favorite fiber art and remember why we love it so much. This letter includes some wonderful memories of 2019, as well as a preview of what's to come this year. And some amazing rugs, of course! We're Midwest Rug Hookers, and like you, we love and practice the art of traditional wool rug hooking.

ABOVE: Need some color? Some of us are looking out at a late-season snow, but here's Holly McMillan's brilliant impressionistic garden, designed by Deanne Fitzpatrick.

About Holly's Impressionistic Garden Rug
and our Deanne Fitzpatrick Online Class...
It had been two years since a few members of Midwest Rug Hookers purchased this Deanne Fitzpatrick pattern and online course (some got the kit, too). In January of this year, we finally had time to gather and spend a couple days watching the videos and hooking together. Of course there was a little wine and cheese involved. Holly was the first to finish--nice work, Holly. It's beautiful. We intend to plan another get-together for Deanne's Sea Garden Abstract. Anybody want to join? Write to tammypav@cox.net .

MRH Fall Classes with Laura Pierce and Theresa Rapstine
Before we get too far, we invite you to take a look at our last newsletter, published in January, about our fall workshop offerings. You can take either workshop immediately following the Nebraska Fall Hook In on September 25th.

Don't miss out on these talented teachers. Laura Pierce hails from Petaluma, California, and that's her self-portrait below. She's an expert in portraits, landscapes, floral designs, and much more, but she can help you with any kind of rug. Theresa Rapstine will travel to Omaha from Colorado to teach us how to use torn strips (put the cutter away!) in our rugs. Theresa loves giving rugs the soft look of an heirloom. Imagine hooking this plush floral rug above. For more information about these workshops and lodging, just click on the link below:

Gratitude to Our Members...

New Membership Chair
for MRH--THREE CHEERS FOR PAT!
In November at the retreat, Pat Bock stepped into the Membership Chair position. Karla Egger had taken it from Dennie Hoffman; however, Karla has a lot with our workshops--four of them this year! So we are deeply grateful to Pat for volunteering to keep track of our memberships!
We Warmly Invite You
to Renew Your Membership or
Join Midwest Rug Hookers ATHA Chapter?

Members, March is the time to renew. Do make sure that your national ATHA membership is current as well.

If you're joining for the first time, first you need to join ATHA, the national organization. If you're already a national member, please feel free to join our chapter for only $12 per year.

Click below for your membership form, and mail it to Dennie with your Retreat Registration. And if you have questions about joining the national organization, Dennie can submit that registration for you. Talk with her at 402-297-3996!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Our guild normally asks that memberships be renewed in early March, but our newsletter is late this time. I promise to do better next year, and let's all try to renew sometime this month.

BELOW: Giant Snowflake , 40” X 46”, #8, 8.5, and 9-cut wool on linen, designed by Cathy Stephan of Red Barn Rugs, hooked by Jean Bartel, Mantorville, Minnesota, 2019.
For Your Reading List...

RHM Member Jean Bartel has recently been featured in Rug Hooking Magazine, in the January/February issue. Jean always puts "A Certain Je Ne Sais Quoi" into any rug she hooks! Congratulations, Jean! Readers, you can find the issue right here...

ABOVE: G alopp , adapted and hooked in a 9-cut by Jean Bartel, Mantorville, Minnesota, 2011. “This is a Norwegian tapestry weaving adaptation,” Jean said, “circa 1960s.” And also pictured above is Jean with her tour de force, My Gramma. Loosely based on the "Big-Boned Women" series of Deanne Fitzpatrick, this rug includes a recipe for fudge, hooked in her grandmother's handwriting, no less! Jean is featured in the January/February issue of Rug Hooking Magazine.
Magnificent Hooked Rugs by Janet Conner has been published by Rug Hooking Magazine this year. The author takes inspiration from the Art of Western Civilization, and you will marvel over rugs adapted from or inspired by prehistoric art, ancient civilizations, and every art movement from the Renaissance through Modern Art! Quite a few Midwest Rug Hookers are featured. Thirty free patterns are included, and hundreds of rug photos, too!

Janet is a beloved teacher of Midwest Rug Hookers. Last March she traveled from her home in Hiram, Maine, to teach a workshop in Aboriginal Art, and this month, she was to join us again to offer two back-to-back workshops on Van Gogh Rug Hooking. With heavy hearts, we have postponed these workshops until March of 2021.

Remembering Our
(Awesome)
First-Annual MRH Members Retreat!
For those members who couldn't join us in November at the beautiful St. Benedict Retreat Center in Schuyler, Nebraska, we hope you'll try to make it this year. While almost everything our guild offers is available to members and non-members alike, our retreat is a great value for just our members. The guild subsidized the retreat, reducing the cost to only $100 per person . That's two nights lodging, six hearty meals, and a lovely, well-lit hooking room, plus a lot of laughs, good advice, and friendship for a whole weekend. Here are a few memories of the Midwest Rug Hookers Member Retreat....
Our vendors, Bryce and Judy Cripps, worked very hard to help us plan our next projects. When we needed a stretch, we wandered out to their booth to browse the wool, and sometimes we got involved in color-planning with a friend.

Three guilds were represented at the first annual Midwest Rug Hookers retreat--Central Iowa Rug Artists, State Line Hookers, and MRH!

The meals at St. Benedict were more than generous, and in fact, we learned not to take everything on the buffet!

But the best part of our retreat was the camaraderie. Until next time, friends, thank you for your good company!
ABOVE: We took this group photo on Sunday, and we missed a few retreaters who had to leave earlier. We all loved the peaceful, art-filled environment of St. Benedict, and we look forward to returning in November of this year!

Top Three Winners
of
Our Prairie Flower Challenge

There were very few rules. All you had to do was hook a one-foot-square mat showing a prairie flower, a group of flowers, or, as our winner decided to do, a whole meadow of flowers. Does it sound easy? Well, it was a challenge, all right, and thank goodness we kept the dimensions small. Our thanks to Carrie Martin for blind-judging the challenge. It turned out to be the very nudge some of us needed to try our hands at designing! Without further ado, here are the top three winners!

( Applause, applause! They're gorgeous!)
ABOVE: Nebraska Meadow, designed and hooked by Terri Bangert

FIRST PRIZE!

Judge Carrie Martin fell in love with Terri Bangert 's mat. "When presented with the Prairie Flower rug challenge," Terri said, "my mind immediately went to a Nebraska meadow in the summer. Mixed among our amazing blue skies are purple salvia, black eyed susan and Husker Red penstemon." Congratulations,Terri!

ABOVE: Coneflower Garden, designed and hooked by Laurie Christiansen

SECOND PRIZE!

Coneflowers captured Laurie Christiansen 's imagination, and she began to look at photos for reference and inspiration. "I had never designed a rug and planned the colors myself," she said. She went for it, and earned the second-place ribbon for her creativity!

ABOVE: Coneflowers, designed and hooked by Dennie Hoffman

THIRD PRIZE!

Dennie Hoffman has always loved this prairie flower. "I took a little liberty with color," she said, "and used some roving I had on hand. The centers are sculpted." Just beautiful, and how nice to have made a pillow!

Many Thanks to Our Judge Carrie Martin
and to Everyone Who
Hooked a Prairie Flower!

Looking Ahead to
the 2020 Nebraska Fall Hook In...

In our next issue, we'll publish more lovely memories of our 2019 Hook In, our biggest event of the year! Last year's rug show was both huge and inspiring, and we'll be asking you to bring your latest again! Our vending committee met in January, and we'll have a few surprises for you on the list of 2020 vendors, coming soon. We'll have some new and exciting educational talks at the Hook In and the usual plethora of lovely door prizes. For now, we hope you have the details in your diary...

Friday, September 25th
9:00 to 3:00
St. Robert Bellarmine Church,
118th and Pacific Streets, Omaha, Nebraska
ABOVE: A crowd gathered in the lobby for Beth Bellairs (Ewe and Eye), who spoke to us about hit-or-miss hooking in our motifs, backgrounds, and borders.

BELOW: We had fourteen vendors, and this is the booth of Victoria Green, whose yarns are spun from the "critters" on her Nebraska farm! Amazing colors.

People's Choice
WINNERS
(pictured below)
at the Nebraska Fall Hook In!

Judy Wilcox on the left won FIRST PLACE for her rug, Best Foot Forward!

Libbey Lundgren on the right won SECOND PLACE for Coral Reef!

And Pat Bock in the center won THIRD PLACE for Christmas Eve!

These ladies won ribbons and vendor bucks. Warmest congrats to all three, and thank you to everyone who brought a rug for the show. It was the best show we've ever had.
Thank you to Laurie Christiansen for photographing the entire rug show! We include photos of the People's Choice Winning Rugs below. In some cases, the rugs were hanging, maybe curling a little, so we cropped the photo to show the rugs at best advantage. More rug show photos to come in our next issue.

Southwest Iowa Art Tour
Just letting our membership know that we represent you every fall at the Southwest Iowa Art Tour in Council Bluffs. Our main goal is to attract beginners, but you should know that our Vice President, Holly McMillan, offered eight or ten hooked mats for sale at this event, simply as a fundraiser for our guild. We thank Holly for her generosity!

BELOW: Here is our booth at the Harvester Artist Lofts Gallery Space on the main floor, where we greeted many art appreciators who had never seen the art of rug hooking before. That is President Jodi Isom, ready to demonstrate our favorite fiber art!

Workshop in Wisconsin, with Red Barn Rugs
Thank you, Wisconsin friends, for sending the photo below of your early 2020 workshop at Red Barn Rugs. Teacher Cathy Stephan must have been the photographer!
ABOVE: Marilyn Becker in red sent this photo of a "group of 5, who are all Marilyn's," she said.  "There are three Marilyns, one Mary-Lynn and one Lynn. To distinguish each other, our nicknames are Bad Marilyn, Good Marilyn, The Other One, Little Lynn, and The Last One). We sure have fun." We'll let our readers guess who's who.

Gatherings in December
On a little farm in the country near Milford, Nebraska, there's a whole lot of hooking going on. Hostess Judy Roth invites rug hookers once a month, and she teaches beginners too. Cozy corners everywhere. Hooked rugs on the walls. Antiques for sale. It's hooker heaven. Thanks to Midwest Rug Hooker Lorie Lindenmuth for sharing the fun photos below!

LEFT: Marsha models a vintage wool coat at Gatherings. Notice that wall of wool, too!
Psst! An upcoming meeting of Midwest Rug Hookers will be held at Gatherings, and you can hook all day! Please stay tuned for that date.

We Miss You,
Mary Jo!

On January 27th, our guild lost a good friend and talented rug hooker and teacher, Mary Jo Lahners of Lincoln, Nebraska. It's difficult to summarize the accomplishments of someone like Mary Jo, but we'll try. Mary Jo's obituary in the Lincoln Star Journal (link below) briefly stated that she had " won several ribbons on a national level. She had news articles written about her skills in rug hooking and was honored in the Celebration special edition of rug hooking magazine for two of her designed rugs. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her friends from all activities including her close friends from... rug hooking."
ABOVE: Mary Jo Lahners, our teacher and friend, who won many a state fair with her rugs and was selected twice for the annual Celebration issue of Rug Hooking Magazine.
ABOVE: Mary Jo taught beginners for our guild. In the class pictured above, she joyfully taught a class of eleven.

BELOW: Mary Jo at the Minglewood Lodge, with her dear friend Holly McMillan.
ABOVE: One of the weekends of rug hooking at Minglewood Lodge. That's Mary Jo, front row, far right, in the flowered shirt.

BELOW: "My Friend Willie" is one of Mary Jo's Celebration-winning rugs. Donna Hrkman was her teacher for this one. In her design, Mary Jo paid tribute to her friendship with Willie, who is very patriotic. Hence, a section of the American flag in the background.
BELOW: Mary Jo hooked many rugs that won ribbons at the Nebraska State Fair, and this one was hooked for her son, a portrait of his dog, Bacon.
We honored Mary Jo at the 2017 Nebraska Fall Hook In--for her leadership in our Midwest communities, for her teaching, and for the wonderful award-winning rugs she has hooked. A lot of us took photos with her on that happy day.

We are thinking of her devoted husband Ron and all her family. We include the link to her obituary for our readers, below.

To all her dear friends and students, may your fond memories be a great comfort to you!

BELOW: Mary Jo on the right, with her fellow students Terri Bangert and Judy Larsen. This was taken on a September Saturday when Nebraska was playing--Terri and Mary Jo wore their red. The clock reads a few minutes before 9:00 a.m. A workshop with Michele Micarelli was about to begin.

You'll find our regional calendar of events below, including events of Midwest Rug Hookers. All of Janet Conner's Van Gogh students should have received an email from Karla Egger last night, with news of the postponement of these workshops until the same time next year. We're sorry we won't be seeing you next week, but it can't be helped.

That's all for this letter, friends, and please feel free to share news from your guild or your part of the Midwest. We want to include your events and photos. Though we may not be seeing each other face-to-face for a while, let's be in touch. Until next time, Keep Calm (Stay Joyful) and Hook On.

All our best,

Midwest Rug Hookers
