Salina Arts and Humanities seeks an individual from our local Artist community to join the site committee for Fire Station #4. This capital improvement project is currently in the works and was identified for an art or design component. The process requires a balanced site committee composed of city employees, community stakeholders, design professionals, and at-large community members in addition to those directly representing the Fire Department. The committee is made up of both voting and non-voting members, and all meetings are open to the public.

Committee members must have the flexibility to attend all meetings along the course of the project. We want to ensure those who volunteer for the committee understand the expectations and time commitment. They can expect the following meetings and responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Initial meeting with project designer/architect 90 min.
  • Visioning session, to determine whether we do an open or limited call to artists/designers 120 min.
  • Review of proposals and selection of artist or designer 90-120 min.
  • Review of the final design 90 min.
  • Final meeting with City Commission 60-90 min.
  • Some homework may occur, reviewing meeting materials or proposals before scheduled meetings.

It is deeply important for our community that we work together in choosing the right artist/designer for this job. Together, we have an opportunity to integrate visual art and design in an impactful way, reflecting our community and the work of our first responders. This is a unique opportunity to serve as an artist in the community. The results of this work and collaboration will be around for generations to come.
