“Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination and the journey. They are home.”

― Anna Quindlen

For an introverted immigrant and working mom who spends two hours commuting on Bus 62/76 plus the Red Line each day, reading is the best way to communicate with other people and learn about the world.

My Love of Reading

Getting into the habit of reading is not as spontaneous for adults as for kids, especially for people for whom English is a second language. Cary initially got me engaged with its wonderful collection of Chinese books published in Hong Kong and Taiwan. I particularly like the translated copies from Western authors. I still remember the relief and the joy from reading a book written by Bob Deits, “Life After Loss: A Practical Guide to Renewing Your Life After Experiencing Major Loss.” It’s my first self-help book. I was amazed by the healing effect and the transforming power that a book could inspire and instill in its readers.

1,327 and Counting ..

This positive experience made me crave more. Gradually, the Chinese collection could not keep up with my curiosity and eagerness. I switched to reading the original copies in English. It’s an eye-opening and life-changing experience. I’ve borrowed 1,327 copies from Cary since 2008, and Cary has never disappointed me by running short on supplies.

Cary Library Patron

With the hint of Valentine's Day romance in the air, I visited Cary Library and was simply delighted to be greeted by a table filled with a curated selection of books fit for the season. I am so thankful for the amazing Cary librarians and their ability to identify books we want to read at exactly the right times. I am also grateful for our donors, like you, who provide the funding necessary for Cary Library to continue to grow and expand its collections and so much more! From kids cooking lessons to book clubs to award-winning speakers, your contributions to the Cary Library Foundation truly make a difference and allow all of Lexington to grow and learn. Thank you for your continued support.
