Staying connected

As you know, to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and to keep our youth and Scouters safe, Scouts Canada has decided to cease in person meetings until further notice. However, just because we can't see each other in person doesn't mean Scouting has to stop! So we asked you, how are you staying connected as a group during this time of physical distancing? Below are the stories and ideas that have been shared with us so far!

Anglin Lake Service Core:

We’d like to challenge the youth in Saskatchewan to a contest - Plan their dream adventure camp at Anglin Lake - and share it with us! Submit entries through our instagram page: @sk.service.corps or via email:  [email protected] . 



The Saskatchewan Service Corps Group is staying connected during the COVID 19. The youth will be looking to complete their WB I training for their service at the Anglin Lake Scout Camp. We are getting to know Scoutstracker & how it can track our personal achievements and plans. And most important to the Scouting youth members and groups of Saskatchewan, we are planning some great adventures for Anglin Lake. For dates please see the standing camps section

1st East Saskatoon:

This past week 1st East Saskatoon held a Cub meeting during our regularly scheduled time, with positive feedback. We’re also gearing up for a cub car “show and shine” one night since all our cubs have their cars at home for painting . 

Regina 79th-Cubs:

The 79th Cubs held their first virtual meeting last night (March 24) using Zoom. We had 6 of 22 youth attend, we hope this number will increase over the coming weeks. Over all the meeting went well. We had a bit of an agenda, but for the most part the kids seemed to just enjoy the interaction with their peers. Penelope and I are going to focus on the Family Helper badge with the kids next week and see how that goes. One of the features we found useful what the ability to mute individual participants. We used this feature, sparingly, when there was lots of background noise in one of the kids houses and when one of the kids was just goofing off. For next week we will ask they they try to use a quiet room in their house.

One of the things that Penelope and I didn't think of until later was two up leadership. Even though we weren't physically with the kids we feel it is still important to make sure their are still two leaders on the call. I don't know if Scouts Canada has a specific policy for this situation, but it would be similar to the need for two leaders in a vehicle when transporting youth.

A podcast I was listening to today talked about a teacher reading to her students over zoom. This might be a good idea for part of a Beaver meeting.

Regina 79th- Scouts:

Last night (March 25) Scouts and Scouters from the 79th Regina Scout Troop had a Zoom meeting. We had 10 out of 16 Scouts attend. We talked about the cooking and baking challenges they were working as part of the Home Personal Achievement Badge, PABs in general, what they had been doing since school stopped last week (A lot of video games) and then we talked about whatever they wanted for a little while. It got a little loud at times.  :)  Had some technical glitches at the start getting audio to connect, but overall it went well. A couple even wore their neckers! It was a great meeting and they said they wanted to do it again next week! A big thanks to all the parents who helped to set it up!  

Regina 63rd:

The 63rd held an online group committee meeting last night, and I joined them. Jason has access to meeting software called Zoom, which you can use via a laptop to view presentations, and talk using the laptop's built-in camera and microphone, or do what I did and just call an 855 number and talk.

With everything cancelled, there was not much planning to do. They sounded like they are pretty much caught up on bills. Kub Kars had already been ordered and available for their youth; their Cub leader was planning to get them to the youth so they could work on them while school is cancelled. He was thinking rather than drive around to all their houses, just to have parents drop by the school on the regular meeting night and pick the kit up from him in the parking lot. Didn't sound like a "meeting" to me so I told him I was okay with it. If the April event isn't held they could still have a rally, even if they have to wait until the fall was the leader's thought.

Jason encouraged every section to get their PQA seasonal reports done so they could qualify for that little quality badge your group gets next to its name online.

Jason did receive an email on Monday from the Regina Board of Education telling him that with the schools closing, access to the schools by outside groups was also cancelled. So it really doesn't matter what the Scouts Canada update is on April 5, unless the weather is nice enough to meet outside, there won't be a place to meet. They were going to think about ways to do something outdoors, when gatherings are allowed. Pretty much "Wait and See".

2 nd North Battleford:

Our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all met through Google Meet last night. Beavers did opening, showed off their finished Beaver Buggies and had a home scavenger hunt. Cubs talked about their week, about PABs and played a game. Scouts talked about their week and brainstormed a "plan B" adventure since AJ2020 was postponed

this year. They're looking forward to next week!

Using Zoom

As you've seen, Zoom is a popular option right now with many of our groups. Bellow is some notes about how to use zoom as written by one of our Support Scouters Ron Schmiedge. Thanks Ron!



When you sign up at zoom.us you get a personal license version automatically, so no cost to start.

You are the "host" and a meeting is actually started right away. You have to make a few decisions when you invite people to your meeting, like picking the right start time and date when you send out the email invitation, otherwise the meeting time is the time you send the email.

The meeting still works for whatever time you want it to be, you just might confuse people that you set up a meeting that was already yesterday when they read the email! I suspect there really isn't a set time within Zoom for the meeting - whenever a host connects, it starts a meeting. Guests connect to the host using the Zoom site and my code, which is shared in the invitation, and find the host waiting. We just have to agree on a time to make the connections. There appears to be a setting allowing guests to connect to the host account before the host connects too, but I need to set that option.

I'd also recommend headphones be used. Sound was low but if you turn up the volume the microphone starts picking up the voices and causing feedback. I found with headphones and using an iPad I could control the headphone volume better and there didn't seem to be an issue with the microphone volume. My wife found the same thing using headphones with the laptop. My daughter didn't have the same issue with her iPhone, but then today's smart phones are probably better designed to be used this way.

The Website says you can only have 40 minute meetings but some have been able to talk for longer. For $20 a month you can have unlimited time.

Kub Kars

Cubs,

It is looking doubtful that the Kub Kar Rally is going to run this year, but don’t despair and

keep working on your designs we will be holding a “Virtual Rally”! Unfortunately we won’t be able to hold the main events, but we can still do the best of show competition along with some "special” design prizes. All the same rules will apply with the exception of the weight restrictions.

To enter e-mail at least two pictures, one of just the Kar, and one of the youth holding the car to [email protected] . Don’t forget to include your name, group and phone number. If you need more than one picture to show off your design sent as many as you need. The dead line is noon on April 25, 2020. Shortly after the deadline the pictures of the kars will be posted on http://kubkar.wascappelle.ca for everyone to view. A panel of judges will review all the entries and winners will be announced by the end of May.

There is no entry fee and the competition is open to all Cubs in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan Cub Camp

You are invited to the 34th Annual Saskatchewan Cub Camp

Come and join us at Craik & District Regional Campground. This park is located on the arterial route between Saskatoon and Regina on Highway 11. There are 26 acres of land located in a small valley; the creek which was dammed to make the Craik Reservoir. Tall elms and poplars grace the

campsite. This is a fully accessible campground with wheelchair access to all areas.

 

Programming for Cub Scouts and 3rd year Beaver Scouts.

 

Offer of Service (OOS) opportunities for Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Scouters. OOS are provided meals for the entire weekend. See the OOS event site for details. Please plan to bring one leader from your group to help with Offer of Service.

South East Cub Camp July 3-5

This is a new camp for all cub age youth. A lot of camps do not have a program for cub age youth. Cubs will arrive Friday night at 7 pm set up camp and get to socialize with the youth that have been at camp all week. South east cub camp will have program for cubs all day Saturday, run by the Venturer and Rover age youth. They will be given an opportunity to get a feel of camp in a fun atmosphere. 

Leaders are asked to come out and help out on Saturday. If you can not attend please contact Chris and she can place youth in another group. We would still like to see the youth participate if we have enough leadership. Cub groups will be responsible for meals for Friday night, Saturday morning and lunch, and Sunday breakfast. Supper will be a pot luck on Saturday night, roast beef and turkey will be provided, groups will bring an item for the potluck supper. 

Deadline is April 1 to get all of the benefits. Cost is $30 for youth and leaders. With the registration youth and leaders receive a badge, tee shirt and hat plus the meat for the pot luck. The printers need all orders in to ensure we receiver our orders before camp. Late orders will not receive the teeshirt and hats.

National Volunteer Week, April 15 – 22, 2020

Volunteer week is a great time to “Thank a Volunteer” through the “Thanks button”. 

Saying Thanks to a Scouts Canada Volunteer for their outstanding contributions to Scouting is easy!

Need an idea of how to write a “Thank you” in 1000 characters or less – think about the 5 “W’s”.  Who, what, when, where and why.  Then add a little more about “how” this impacted the program or the youth.

Youth members are providing great service to scouting– now is a great time to nominate a youth member who is making an outstanding contribution to scouting for the Medal of Maple.



The Medal of the Maple for Distinguished Youth Service is an award created by the members of the National Youth Committee, designed to honour those youth who have significantly contributed to the Movement and the spirit of Scouting through community service, extraordinary Scouting participation and a solid system of personal values.

International Opportunity

Standing Camps

Anglin Lake Semi-Wilderness Camp Open on weekends in May/June and all summer during the month of July. You pick the length that works for you."  is located in Great Blue Heron Provincial Park just inside the incredible northern boreal forest (north of Prince Albert). This camp offers a true youth-led experience as all programming is provided by the Saskatchewan Service Corps Group (Scouts & Ventures) youth ages 13-17 and is customized based on your youth's interests, age and experience. No previous experience is

necessary. It can include, but is not limited to paddling, hiking, shelter building, camp skills, knots & lashing, and pioneering. Off site campsites are available for overnight

excursions (hiking or paddling). Groups come self contained for food and gear.

Wilderness Rendezvous (WR) July 4th-July 12th , 2020

Located in the West Block of the Cypress Hills Provincial Park. This is a land-based backpacking and orienteering program with basic hikes of 8 – 10 km, progressing to a 50 km trip in two provinces. The spectacular Cypress Hills Provincial Park offers some of the most breathtaking outdoor scenes in the southern part of the province, such as the Conglomerate Cliffs and a spectacular outdoor night sky.

Camp Pi-Anue June 27- July 5, 2020

Located in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. This is a water and a land based program that combines overnight lightweight hiking, backpacking, canoeing and pioneering skills and projects.
