Today we're excited to announce that Adam MacDonald is the new executive director of Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ. Adam joins us after serving as marketing director for six years at Portland Downtown. He's thrilled to lead FOKO – and we're delighted to welcome him aboard!
A Quick Q & A with Adam
What excites you most about your new role?
It was a case of "love at first sight" when I toured the organ for the first time back in September. I knew it would be impressive, but I wasn't expecting to be so awestruck. The Kotzschmar Organ is such a magnificent instrument on so many levels – historically, culturally, structurally, acoustically – and I can't wait for even more people to experience it in all its glory!
What have you learned in your first 10 days?
It's wonderful to see is that FOKO is surrounded by so many kind and dedicated people. From our board of directors to our community partners to our loyal patrons, it's clear that the Kotzschmar is loved. Most recently – before our Phantom of the Opera show at Merrill Auditorium – I got to see our organ curators in action. David and Nick Wallace are the father-son team behind David E. Wallace & Co., a Gorham-based company specializing in the construction, care, and restoration of pipe organs. Their commitment to their craft inspires me.
Where do you see FOKO a year from now?
I'm really looking forward to getting our docent & tour programs back on track. The pandemic put a pause on them, but I expect they'll make a triumphant return in 2022. Tours – along with our incredible concert series – are a great way to bring people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities closer to the Kotzschmar Organ.
What's coming up next?
Just last week, I heard James Kennerley, our municipal organist, rehearsing for Christmas with Kennerley. I must admit: it put me in a holiday mood instantly! Tickets for our December 20th show in Merrill Auditorium are available now – and we'll be adding a digital, on-demand option soon. Stay tuned for updates and reminders!
