MAYOR MARKLEY'S
TOP 5: WEEK OF JULY 15

1) This past week, we celebrated the 76th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Gig Harbor. July 12, the City celebrated as we do best, with a high-energy concert on the waterfront! Happy Birthday, Gig Harbor! You don’t look a day over 75! You can find some fun historic background on the City's "birthday" here from our friends at the Harbor History Museum.
2) Congratulations to the Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank on their Grand Opening! I was so pleased to be part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new home of our long-standing local food bank, joined by other local elected officials, including State Representative Michelle Caldier, State Senator Emily Randall, and several of our City Councilmembers.
The City of Gig Harbor is so proud to be one of the contributors to this new building, providing a much-needed resource to our community. The new space gives more room for grocery and clothing, as well as new warehouse space. You can watch the full ribbon cutting here...
3) Did you know the Harbor History Museum keeps a storied Gig Harbor tradition going each year? What better time to explore our beaches than throughout the month of July! The Round Rock Contest started back in 1951 - you can view each year’s winners on display at the Harbor History Museum. Entries are accepted on site at the Museum throughout July – enter the roundest rock you can find for a chance to win a cash prize – winners will be announced on August 20, 2022 at the History Museum’s annual fundraiser, History Rocks! You can find more details below on the contest's rules!

4) Traffic Impacts This Coming Week: This coming Monday, July 18, starting at 8:00AM, Peninsula Light Company will be performing work at the Harborview/ Stinson roundabout that requires traffic control for all three legs of the roundabout. This work is scheduled to take one day to complete. Please expect longer than normal traffic delays during this work and use alternative routes if possible. We're so close to the end of the project, and I already see a great continual flow of traffic!

2022 Pavement Maintenance Begins: On Monday, July 18 we'll see the beginning of annual pavement maintenance around the Olympic/Point Fosdick corridor. There will be temporary traffic control through the area, and some night work. You can opt in here to follow along and get email or text alerts about this specific project for up-to-the-minute updates. I urge you to support local businesses in the area - access will be maintained to all residences and businesses.

5) The City is a great place to work, and we're looking forward to adding to our team soon. New career opportunities with the City include: Community Development Director, Construction Supervisor, Lateral Police Officer, Public Works Assistant, Public Works Laborer, Senior Engineer (coming soon!), and Wastewater Operator/Operator in Training. If you're interested or know someone who would be a great fit, Check out the full list and description of positions available here.

Wishing you a wonderful summer Harbor weekend,

- Mayor Tracie Markley
ROUND ROCK TREASURE HUNT
Happening now through June 30!
The Harbor History Museum is once again hosting the historic Round Rock Competition! Created back in 1951 by C.E. Shaw, a popular Gig Harbor figure who was always looking for ways to have fun, Shaw had become well known for entertaining Gig Harbor with Rooster Races in the 30's and 40's.

The concept for the contest is simple. Participants search for the roundest natural rock they can find and submit it to the Harbor History Museum. All rock entries must have been found in Washington State, be naturally formed, and meet the size specifications in our rules (loosely, no smaller than a ping-pong ball and no larger than a softball).

Submissions may be dropped off Wednesday - Saturday through July 30th between 11A to 4P. Email operations@harborhistorymuseum.org with any questions. Winners will be announced on August 20, 2022 at History Rocks. Cash prizes will be awarded to the five rocks judged to be the most perfectly spherical rocks.

Be sure to see the winning entries at History Rocks and enjoy an evening with a special outdoor concert, featuring Jr. Cadillac, behind-the-scenes museum tours, food and drinks! Tickets start at $100 with special table options available.

2022 PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE
The City of Gig Harbor and its contractor, Miles Resources, Inc., will perform upcoming repair and maintenance improvements on various streets throughout the city.

  • Point Fosdick Drive between Olympic Drive and Harbor Country Drive

  • Hollycroft Street between Olympic Drive and Reid Drive

Impacts to the Public: City Council awarded a construction contract to Miles Resources on June 27. Construction of the 2022 Pavement Maintenance work will commence within the next three weeks.
