We are proud to announce completion of both our Nicomen Slough and Princeton Grasslands – MapleCross Meadow – Phase III projects this week. More than 500 acres of sensitive ecosystems are now conserved forever.
The closing of Princeton Grasslands – MapleCross Meadow – Phase III marks the end of three year project to protect 2600 acres of sensitive grasslands. This property provides vital habitat for rare birds like the Williamson’s Sapsucker, important winter range for Mule Deer, and powerful carbon sequestering for clean air for all plants and animals. We are so grateful for all the wonderful donors, including MapleCross, who made this project possible. Read more about this project.
Nicomen Slough is now our newest conservation complex with the edition of this parcel. Located in the Fraser Valley, Nicomen Slough is located in an area known as the ‘Heart of the Fraser’. Biodiversity flourishes in places where land meets water, and Nicomen Slough is an area of very high biodiversity value. The area has regional significance for waterfowl as a stop-over on their migrations, more than 100 Trumpeter Swans spend the winter in these wetland marshes among the many local bird species. The property has exceptional fisheries habitat, with more than 24 fish species living in the streams and side channels. Not only birds and fish, but also mammals and amphibians all make their homes on this property. Read more about this project.
Enhancing Estuary Resilience
The Nature Trust of BC has been working with our partners in the West Coast Conservation Land Management Program and Coastal First Nations on the Enhancing Estuary Resilience Program since 2019. This 5-year project aims to improve estuary habitat to enhance the long-term sustainability and health of wild BC fish stocks.
In this video, Jared Dick, Uu-a-thluk Central Region Biologist, explains his work for the project at the Moyeha River Estuary. With many salmon populations declining in this river, Dick’s research focuses on understanding the health and fitness of juvenile salmon to hopefully gain a clearer understanding of what challenges they are facing.
