DON'T TRADE YOUR STRENGTH
FOR A MOMENT OF PLEASURE
Most of us are familiar with the story in the Bible about Samson and Delilah. Samson is depicted as strong and anointed, but few of us know how vulnerable he was at the same time. He was born with a purpose but didn’t follow the Lord’s direction. His mother was barren when an angel came to her and announced his birth. The angel of the Lord said to her:
“For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.” — Judges 13:5
The Spirit of the Lord would come upon Samson, giving him superhuman strength to do what no other man could do. He tore a lion apart with his bare hands, but he wasn’t able to conquer his own heart. He broke ropes and chains, but he could not resist the temptation of Delilah. God forbade Israel to intermarry with the Philistines because they were their enemies. Yet Samson fell in love with a Philistine woman, the very people he was anointed to defeat.
Samson shows us that anointing without character cannot sustain our destiny. The story of Samson is very unique, but his struggle is a prophetic picture of what many of us are going through right now. The Philistines came to capture him and using his strength, he got away each time. He slayed 1,000 men with a jawbone. I can’t get into the details of his life for lack of time, but Samson was very rebellious. One time God would show up supernaturally, providing water from a rock in the desert, and moments later, Samson was right back in compromise.
Then the Philistines came to Delilah offering her 5,500 silver coins and said, “FIND OUT THE SECRET TO HIS STRENGTH” She pressed him three times, and he lied three times to protect his anointing, but then the fourth time he told her all his heart. He explained how no razor has ever come upon his head. He had been a Nazirite to God from his mother’s womb, and if he were shaven, his strength would leave him and he would become weak like any other man.
So she cut his hair while he slept. And when he woke up, he said, "I will go out as before, and shake myself free" but HE DID NOT KNOW THAT THE LORD HAD LEFT HIM. He did not know that his strength had left him. The Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes, and bound him with bronze shackles. And one last time, he pulled down the two pillars of the temple of Dagon, and the whole building fell, killing himself, 3,000 Palestinian lords and the people inside. The bible says this last act was greater than his first.
We are living in a Samson generation. Samson didn’t even know that the Lord departed from him when Delilah cut his hair. Many of you were called and consecrated from birth, yet you are living in compromise. You have lost your relationship with the Holy Spirit, and you don’t even realize it. You were called to be a warrior, yet you are entertaining what you were anointed to destroy. Some are choosing Delilah above your covenant with Jesus.
The Holy Spirit has been warning me for some time now - be careful who you trust. Watch out for Delilah, those familiar spirits who will smile in your face while studying your weakness. There are people who are being used as instruments from the enemy to try to destroy your relationship with the Lord. He will plant people in your life not to love you, but to disarm you. Just as Samsons enemies tried to find out the secret to his strength, your enemies are doing the same. They will test you to see where you will submit.
You need to recognize that the secret of your strength is the Holy Spirit. Don’t let anyone try to take the anointing from your life but pray just as King David did, saying, “Do not take your Holy Spirit from me”
Judges 16:19-20
Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” So he awoke from his sleep, and said, “I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!” But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him.
Psalm 51:10-11
Create in me a clean heart, O Go, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
