Meet Your Conference Hosts and Committee Co-Chairs
|
|
|
|
Kari Middleton is the Manger of Business Development for Pima Community College. In this role she develops and implements employer supported training, coordinates, and executes high level tours, and cultivates strategic partnerships with business and industry representatives. In her role, she oversees non-credit training programs that provides training for high priority jobs with sustainable living wages.
|
|
Jason Bowersock is the Director of Aviation for Pima Community College. His aviation maintenance career began in the US Air Force as an Aerospace Propulsion Apprentice. He served in various capacities before retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant at Beale Air Force Base. He returned to Tucson and began teaching for Pima's Aviation Technology program before accepting his current role as director.

May 24, 1868 was the birthday of Charles Taylor, an Indiana hog farmer who became the first airplane mechanic. Congress declared May 24 National Aviation Maintenance Technician Day to honor him and the AMTs who followed in his footsteps.
Regarded as the father of aviation maintenance, Charles Edward Taylor has become a hero to aircraft maintenance technicians worldwide. A great teaching tool, the 2020 documentary below was written and directed by Joshua Lang honors his life and legacy.

GAO Releases New Report on Mechanic Demand
|
|
|
|
The 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act directed the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to study the aviation workforce of the future, including the current and future supply of aircraft mechanics. In a report published on May 17, 2023, GAO found that while the number of newly certificated mechanics grew in recent years, it could not make any concrete conclusions about the suspected shortage of aircraft mechanics. FAA Gives Kids Opportunity to Design Airports
|
|
|
|
The FAA Airport Design Challenge took flight on April 1 with an extended enrollment period. Students in grades K-12 get to leverage their Microsoft Minecraft skills to design virtual airports. The challenge provides an engaging and relevant way to connect students from across the globe to the aerospace industry and STEM careers. Read more.

Proposed Bill Would Codify FAA's Women in Aviation Advisory Board
|
|
|
|
Women have out-numbered men since the late 1940s and make up about half the country's workforce, U.S. Census data show. But in most aviation occupations, women hold less than 20% of the jobs, and the figure has not moved much in decades. Read more.

NASA Releases New Research Opportunity Targeting Aviation Maintenance
|
|
|
|
In a continued effort to develop the new air transportation ecosystem, NASA Aeronautics will focus on new forms of aircraft, as well as the wider system in which these aircraft will operate. Research proposals are due June 30. Read more.

Now Accepting Curriculum Applications for Fall 2023
|
|
|
|
Choose Aerospace, ATEC's sister foundation, was created to unite stakeholders to grow the pipeline and increase diversity in aviation maintenance. The non-profit is pursuing that mission through development of high school aviation maintenance programs.
The Choose Aerospace aviation maintenance curriculum puts high school students on a direct path to mechanic certification, either through direct-employment opportunities or matriculation into a part 147 programs.

Choose Aerospace Announces 2023 Scholarship Recipients
|
|
|
|
During the awards luncheon at the ATEC Annual Conference in Chicago, IL, thirty-two students, one instructor, and five schools were recognized as this year's recipients for the Choose Aerospace Scholarship Program. Over $45,000 in licensing fees, training systems, cash awards, books, testing fees and more were awarded. A big thank you to all the donors for making it possible, and congratulations to the recipients. Read more.
