All of the children in our program started the school year with all of the supplies they needed, thanks to the Billy Scott Fund!

An after-school program was launched at Easton's Promise by an Easton Elementary School teacher and awesome volunteers!

In addition, several of the single guests at Evelyn's Place are very close to qualifying for transitional housing, so we hope to be sharing the news of their big moves with you in the new year!

Along with shelter, case management, and connection with service providers, your support also gives our guests invaluable educational opportunities that provide them with the knowledge and tools to achieve and sustain Success! Thanks to you, our guests attended the following classes in 2023:

Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin' By World - Guests learn about poverty, the hidden societal rules that can prevent people from overcoming poverty, how to identify and utilize available resources, and how to wean off services once they are more independent.

Life Skills Training - Guests explore the fundamental concepts of taking care of oneself, including maintaining good health, how to make good decisions, avoiding risk-taking, and more.

Parenting Workshop - Parents in our program attend a bi-weekly workshop led by the Talbot County Department of Social Services. During these sessions, they discuss how to maintain a positive parent-child relationship, address any struggles they have been having, and share their experiences with one another.

Money Fundamentals - In this two-part program, guests evaluate themselves to discover what kind of spender they are. They learn about identifying priorities, creating a personal budget, and putting money aside for unforeseen expenses.

Untangling Relationships - During these sessions, guests learn how to recognize unhealthy relationships and codependency, and receive tips for how to remove themselves from these unhealthy situations.

Job Readiness - Guests learn how to fill out a resume, how to dress and answer questions during an interview, and other important job search skills.

Character Counts for Adults - Guests explore the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Respect) and discuss how they can implement these concepts both during their time at TIS and when they leave our program.

Last week, nine guests graduated from the Character Counts Program - our final life skills class graduation of the year. We are so very proud of all of our guests who completed these courses this year. They now have a breadth of knowledge that will help them throughout their lives!

YOU make all of this possible! You change, and in many cases, SAVE lives every single day. We are humbled and honored to partner with you in the fight against homelessness in our community.

Seniors Are The Fastest-Growing Segment of the US Homeless Population

Half of the guests at our singles shelter, Evelyn's Place, are over the age of 55. Seniors have now become the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. They often live on fixed incomes that do not keep up with increased housing costs and inflation. If their cost of living increases, many are not physically able to re-enter the workforce to earn additional income. This makes them especially vulnerable and puts them at an increased risk of becoming unhoused.

Seniors often have additional health and safety needs that we must address. These can be quite costly to deliver, so we are incredibly grateful to have recently received a $10,000 grant from the Mid-Shore Community Foundation to help serve our senior guests.

All month, you have been hearing from our former guest Angie about how your support changed her family's life for the better. Today, we are sharing the final installment of our interview series with Angie. She wanted tο»Ώo express her immense gratitude for the financial, emotional, educational, and other support that she has received from Talbot Interfaith Shelter thanks to extraordinary people like YOU!

There's Still Time To Help More Guests Like Angie Achieve Success!

We are so grateful to everyone who has made a year-end gift in support of our mission thus far. Thanks to you, we have secured our $60,000 match, and are well on our way to raising the $1.3 million dollars we need to operate this fiscal year. But we still have a ways to go!

If you have not yet made a year-end donation, we hope you will consider doing so. No matter the size of the gift, you are changing lives!

We love to shine a light on the wonderful staff, volunteers, and supporters who make sure that we are able to carry out our mission to provide Shelter, Stability, Support, and a path to Success for local families and individuals in need. Team TIS has been extremely busy this month. Here are some of the highlights!

A Community of Santas!

Christmastime at Talbot Interfaith Shelter is always a massive undertaking. Our wonderful community stepped up to ensure that every single guest in our program (and three former guests) had gifts under the tree on Christmas morning! Pictured here are representatives from Easton Village, who collected $2,000 in gift cards to help purchase gifts for our guests. In addition, many supporters donated meal kits so that the guests in our apartments could enjoy a special meal on Christmas Day. We are beyond grateful to everyone who participated!

Restaurants Give Back!

Easton restaurants Doc's Downtown Grille and Legal Assets hosted a Community Day every Thursday in November in honor of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. They donated 10% of their sales from the community days to TIS... An astounding $6,030 to help fight homelessness in our community!

We are so thankful to Doc's and Legal Assets for their support. If you're out and about, please stop in, enjoy a delicious meal, and thank them for everything they do to make our community a better place!

A True Hero!

One of our wonderful house sitters, Bill Wilson, is a former EMT. Bill offered to share his expertise by providing free CPR and Narcan training for our Talbot Interfaith Shelter staff and some of our volunteers.

Thanks to Bill, our staff and supporters now have the knowledge and skills to save a life!

A Visit From Our Founder!

Talbot Interfaith Shelter's founder, Evelyn Sedlack, was in town this month, and stopped by for a tour of our singles shelter, Evelyn's Place, which was named in her honor. It was such a pleasure to show her how much her legacy has grown, and how many lives have been changed thanks to her leadership, tenacity, and compassion for our neighbors. We love you, Evelyn!

Celebrating the Sedlack Society!

The Sedlack Society (also named after the incomparable Evelyn Sedlack), was formed in 2022 to recognized those donors who give $1,000 dollars or more in support of our mission each year. There are four Sedlack Society levels - Shelter ($1,000 - $2,499), Stability ($2,500 - $4,999), Support ($5,000 - $9,000), and Success ($10,000+).

On Thursday, December 14th, we gathered at the Tidewater Inn to celebrate our Sedlack Society members and provide them with an update on what their generosity made possible this year. Special thanks to the Tidewater Inn for donating the space, decor, and refreshments for this special celebration!

We hope you'll take a few moments to watch the short video below and meet a few of our Sedlack Society members!
