As we look back over the past year - celebrating our successes and remembering those who have supported our mission, it is with a grateful heart that I thank each and every one of you. Our collective commitment to patients and families who travel to Boston for medical care and stay with Hospitality Homes has allowed for the many accomplishments we have highlighted in this newsletter. You make our work possible.

From our homes to yours, we would like to wish you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season.

Most gratefully,
Marianne M. Jones
Executive Director

Guest and Host Stories

The Huffman Family and
The Lodish Family

Chelsey and Brandon Huffman, a young couple from Minnesota, had to make the trip to Boston so that their infant son Oliver could receive treatment for his esophageal atresia- a rare birth defect- at the highly regarded Esophageal Airway Treatment Center at Boston Children's Hospital.

When Chelsey and Brandon Huffman first flew their son Oliver half way across the country to Boston for what would be numerous surgeries, out of desperation they applied for housing with Hospitality Homes. They were placed in the home of Pam and Harvey Lodish who have been volunteer hosts with Hospitality Homes for over thirty years.

"We knew only one person in Boston when we came. It was frightening that we were coming for our son's major surgeries without any support. Pam and Harvey have been such an amazing support system for us, even when their only obligation was to have an open room for us to stay. We have said that we have no doubt we would choose Hospitality Homes again if we had to do this over."

The care the Huffman's received at Boston Children's Hospital was written about in The Boston Globe and their wonderful experience with Hospitality Homes was shared on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.

Since his last visit to Boston in October, Oliver Huffman is doing well and enjoying his home-life back in Minnesota.

Volunteer Host Anu Advani

honored with
Point of Light Award

We would like to congratulate Anu Advani for receiving a Point of Light Award for her work with Hospitality Homes. Anu has been a volunteer host since 2010 and in that time has provided a warm and welcoming place to stay for 67 of our guests. You can read more about Anu's generosity and award in the December print edition of 'Dr. Oz, The Good Life' and on the  Points of Light website.

New Staff

Hospitality Homes welcomes Katie Hardiman to the team as Program Coordinator. Katie is a New York native who recently relocated to the Boston area. She graduated from Kenyon College in 2015 with a B.A. in Religious Studies and a focus on social justice movements. She spent a semester abroad at Queen's University, Belfast in a program entitled 'Society, Conflict, and Peace' where she expanded her knowledge of deeply divided societies, international human rights, and civil disobedience. She was the president of her college's premier, co-educational community service society and a weekly volunteer at a local homeless shelter that provided housing and support for people dealing with emotional, legal, and financial issues. She has spent the majority of her life working with children and under-served communities and believes that every human being should be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. Katie spends her free time taking dance classes, attending community organized events, and searching for the perfect gluten-free baked good.

Special Events Recap 2016

House Party Fundraiser

On the evening of October 20th, staff members, volunteer hosts, board members, and friends of Hospitality Homes gathered for mission driven conversation and giving. We received  $6,200 in donations that were then matched 100% by the Wind Point Family Foundation.  A special thank you to Board Member and Volunteer Host Judy Chasin for hosting this event in her lovely home.

8th Annual Wine Tasting

Hospitality Homes held its 8th Annual Wine Tasting, complete with a three course meal, at The Inn at Longwood Medical on the evening of November 10th. Nearly one hundred guests celebrated and honored our dedicated volunteer community. We were able to raise nearly  $8,000 in ticket sales and donations. A special thank you to The Inn at Longwood Medical and staff whose generosity made this event possible.

Hosts@Home

Our host home community is unique not only because of the generosity and compassion of our volunteers, but also for their diverse talents. In 2016 we decided to connect our members in a way that would enhance their hosting experience.

Throughout the year we hosted seven intimate dinners at our host homes in order to strengthen ties between existing and new hosts. The goal was to give every host an opportunity to get to know other hosts in a relaxed, friendly setting to foster a sense of community.

Over the past year, Hospitality Homes has added over 35 new volunteer hosts and we expect to welcome in even more hosts in the coming months.  As 2017 approaches, please contact Denise at dduclos@hosp.org if you would like to host a Host@Home dinner.

Apartment Program

At the beginning of 2016, Hospitality Homes was fortunate to have two donated apartments. The first was donated by The Continental Wingate Company and is located in Brighton's Reservoir Towers, owned by Wingate's CEO, Gerald Schuster.

The second apartment was generously donated by Equity Residential in its West End
apartments, right near
Massachusetts  General Hospital.

Over the course of 2016, Hospitality Homes has acquired three more apartments to meet the growing needs of our organization.

This summer, Avalon Bay approached us and ended up donating a one-bedroom apartment in their Prudential building.  Then this fall, after the completion of their North Station location, Avalon Bay has contributed a brand new two-bedroom apartment in their state of the art building.

Our fifth apartment, located at 1085 Boylston Street, is leased from Compass Furnished Apartments and has been made entirely possible by our generous donors.

With the addition of three new apartments, Hospitality Homes is more equipped than ever to help house families traveling to Boston for medical care.

Airbnb Open Homes

This year, Hospitality Homes partnered with Airbnb, the world's leading community driven hospitality company, as part of the Airbnb Open Homes philanthropic program. As part of this pilot program, Airbnb pledged $40,000 worth of coupons that were able to serve 113 family and friends of patients seeking medical care in Boston for a total of 54 trips.

While Hospitality Homes has been helping families in need of medical housing since 1983, the demand has unfortunately outpaced the availability of housing for families traveling to Boston each year. The recipients of the Airbnb coupons were guests who applied for housing through the Hospitality Homes website but who we were unable to place with our volunteer hosts due to the last minute nature of their request, the proximity to hospital needed, and/or because our typical housing options in the summer were fully booked.

This pilot program made it possible for us to provide free housing for dozens of people who we would not have been able to host otherwise.

Strategic Plan

Hospitality Homes is very excited to launch its strategic planning process in order to equip the organization to meet the challenges of the future. HighgateGlobal, an organization specializing in helping nonprofit organizations develop for the future is guiding Hospitality Homes to create this strategic plan. We look forward to sharing more with you about our plans and goals in the upcoming months.

Thank you for your continued support of Hospitality Homes.

We wish you a happy and healthy new year.
