A Year of Growth
2022 in Review and Year End Appeal
|
|
Dear Sailing Science Supporter,
We want to thank you for following the SSC over the past year. Without the support from people like you we could not continue to do what we are doing. In 2022 the SSC forged ahead. We built partnerships, friendships, new exhibits and new initiatives that have brought the SSC ever closer to our vision.
If you have been thinking about supporting the SSC, but have not yet made the move, now is a great time to take action. Donating is one way to help, but there are other options, too. At the bottom of this email we provide a range of things you can do.

|
When we look back on 2022, it is astonishing the ground the SSC covered in the span of 12 months. The SSC grew by leaps and bounds, with no signs of slowing down. Below are some highlights.
|
|
2023 is shaping up with even more exciting things in store. We hope you will stay tuned and stay involved as we grow the Sailing Science Center to the next level!

With just twelve issues per year, the SSC is unable to adequately recognize all the people and organizations who are contributing to make a difference. These twelve headed our newsletter in 2022 (not in order).
Top Row: Spirit of India Sculpture (Building One), Kurt Holland (Cal Poly), Shiante Lewis (Treasure Island YMCA), Preston Thomas
Middle Row: Walt Bilofsky (Treasure Island Museum), Ben Yamanaka (Oakland Yacht Club), Natalie Corkhill, Carisa Harris-Adamson (Treasure Island Sailing Center)
Bottom Row: Mike Hennahane (Treasure Island Museum), Joanna Oren Massey (Lawrence Hall of Science), Simo Mäkiharju (UC Berkeley), Rick Waltonsmith

The SSC held 12 exhibitions in 2022, reaching an estimated 730 people from March through September. Above are images from our Encinal Yacht Club and Treasure Island Community YMCA exhibitions, proving that the SSC's exhibits appeal to sailors and non-sailors, alike.

2022 continued the SSC's growth in partners, collaborators, and supporters. The logos above recognize some of the organizations that were involved during 2022.

The Making Waves exhibit was an instant hit! Our junior scientists didn't need instructions to start making artificial beaches or to see who could make the biggest tsunami. It was one of four exhibits added to the SSC's collection in 2022. The others included a pair of model boats and an energy exhibit.

The Flow Loop is a unique initiative and partnership, launched in the fall of 2022. The SSC is supporting a group of UC Berkeley undergraduates (pictured below), guided by mechanical engineering professor, Simo Mäkiharju. The students are designing and building what will be the SSC's most elaborate exhibit to-date. The exhibit will create a continuous flow of water that can be used for observation, measurement, testing, and of course, play! We can't wait.

The SSC 2022 Making Waves Gala
|
|
On December 10 the SSC held its 2022 Making Waves Gala in the historic Treasure Island Administration Building. Despite heavy rain, a full room of guests showed up, as we built new partnerships, and set records for the SSC's auction donations and sales.

Are you ready? There are many ways to support the SSC, not all of which cost money. Here are some options:

In closing, we want to thank and acknowledge everyone who chipped in to help in 2022. We wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year. See you in 2023!
