Note: Kris Engstrom was our Peace Corps leader in 1968 while we trained to go to Afghanistan to vaccinate for smallpox. Our group has kept in touch during the past nearly 50 years. This story was emailed to our group recently.

By Kristina Engstrom

It happened [last] Tuesday. What I, we, have feared is come to life.

Cheryl and I drove to Boston where Cheryl had an appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She got some needed prescription changes and encouraging words from her doctor, Dr. Botoman (pn. bottom-man, but he is not a proctologist).  We decided to eat in the hospital cafeteria, as we were going to have dinner at one of our favorite places (they have a gluten-free menu for Cheryl), Papa-Razzi.

So we got salads at the cafeteria salad bar and were in the midst of polishing them off, when we heard shouting. Whoever was making the racket was behind me but Cheryl had a fairly clear and audible view, and everyone else in the place stopped in their tracks and looked over. I thought it was a domestic squabble: after all, it is a hospital, and people get unpleasant news there and can be on edge and fussy. I turned around and saw an African-American woman, in her 30s, screaming at someone sitting nearby. Impossible to ignore. The shouting escalated and the woman said, "I belong here. I'm not an immigrant... I'm an American, too.  I was just sitting here trying to have a nice lunch and you..... How can you say such a f......g thing." READ THE REST OF THE STORY>>
