Defining Reconciling
Pastor Ed
This Sunday is RIC Sunday. RIC stands for “Reconciling in Christ.” The dictionary offers several meanings for the word “reconciling.”

  1. Restore friendly relations between.
  2. Cause to coexist in harmony; make or show to be compatible.
  3. Make (one account) consistent with another, especially by allowing for transactions begun but not yet completed.
  4. Settle (a disagreement).
  5. Make someone accept (a disagreeable or unwelcome thing).

As a “Reconciling” congregation, we are committed to welcoming everyone and we are committed to reconciling our differences. We all have differences and we can choose to allow those differences to divide us, or we can commit to taking our lead from Jesus Christ and work toward reconciling those differences.

Following Jesus means we do the hard work of trying to understand and care about other people, especially when they differ from us. Rather than stand in judgment, we have a duty to include, welcome, and reconcile with one another. It’s not always easy, but it is our sacred obligation. We are called to build a more loving, understanding, and welcoming world.

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. But love your enemies…Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”
--Luke 6:27-38
LOCATION
CHANGE
Because this Sunday, February 24 is a very important RIC Sunday, the Church Council has decided to change the format for the listening session.
Instead of having a formal meeting space, the Pastoral Leadership Team and Council will be available at a table in the Narthex, where all questions regarding the proposal are welcome. Note cards will be available for people to write their concerns.
For those who would like to have a formal meeting, the team will be available from noon to 1:00pm in the Conference room to take more questions.
Thank you all for the questions we have received so far, we look forward to hearing more from all of you.
THE EVER-MOVING CHURCH YEAR

As we leave the Epiphany Season---a true favorite for music lovers, with many hymns and anthems about Christ being the Light of the World, we pause for something we all need to hear even more. TLC has what we call RIC Sunday. If you don't recognize those three letters, it means “Reconciling in Christ” which is simply accepting everyone as they are into our fellowship of believers.

Several years ago now, we voted to become a reconciling church, and if we had not done this, where would we be? Not living as Jesus did? Jesus always accepted people just as they were, causing some conflict back then too....Our egos sometimes tell us falsely that we are better than someone else. In Jesus' day it was often lepers, or tax collectors that were shunned. The letters LGBTQ were unknown, but don't you think that God's Son knew that all are created equal? I hope that one day we can say that we are “Reconciled” completely and not still in the process.

Coming quickly after this Sunday, is Transfiguration Sunday, our church's name, chosen over 60 years ago. I don't know who chose the name, but it's good to be unique and easily recognized instead of following a saint's name, where people have to ask you “which one.”

Get set, people – Lent is soon upon us!

RIC Sunday Music
TLC extends a warm welcome to Sunday's guest organist, Tim Strand, music director at Gloria Dei Lutheran church in St. Paul. Tim will be accompanied by Pastor Arthur and his wife Laura (not pictured) on trumpets.
RIC Sunday Guest Preacher
The message for RIC Sunday will be presented by Becky Woll, one of the first TLC confirmands back, well, a while ago. Becky is also a Stephen Ministry Leader and has served as a Stephen Minister at another church prior to coming to TLC.
From Ann and Dennis Gettis:
"Jeremiah’s Hope for Kindness" was created in honor of our precious son, Jeremiah, who took his life on October 22, 2006 at the age of 21. In a letter to us he wrote that he no longer wanted to live in a “world where people are so cruel.” In another letter he wrote about being bullied. He wrote that the bullying he endured left him “with no self esteem and feeling like a loser.” We are dedicated to changing the world Jeremiah described as so cruel by creating kind and caring schools and communities so that every child feels valued and cared about. It is our mission to support efforts and be a resource for fostering kind and respectful homes, schools and communities.

Wednesday evening, February 27 at 7pm in Fellowship Hall, Jeremiah's mother, Ann Gettis, shares her story and what she has learned about bullying and its impact. She will offer stategies for addressing and preventing bullying, and fostering kindness and well-being. This is a message for all age groups; TLC members, friends and neighbors.

Meet with the Pastoral Leadership Team & the Church Council

After receiving feedback, the Pastoral Leadership Team and the Church Council is revising the schedule for our Listening Sessions regarding the Co-Pastor Proposal to allow for a greater range of participation. The sessions will be:

  • Sunday, Feb. 24: CHANGE OF VENUE. Narthex in the morning. Conference room noon - 1pm

  • Church Council Follow-up Session, Sunday, March 17. Noon - 1:30pm

Purpose
The purpose of the listening sessions is for representatives from the Council and the Pastoral Leadership Team to gather questions and input from the congregation. Our intent is to be open to the hearts and minds of our church family. Your feedback will be reviewed when making further determination about the proposal. The Pastoral Leadership Team has sent out this proposal at the same time as the Congregational Assessment Tool (C.A.T.) results have been released. While the timing of these two presentations lined up, they are two separate issues, but they do relate to one another in how this congregation can move forward. At these sessions, we will focus more on the Pastoral Leadership Team (PLT) Proposal, but welcome any questions regarding the CAT survey on the note-cards provided.
The sessions are intended to be a drop-in format around worship services, not to compete with worship. Members of the Council and the Pastoral Leadership Team will be present during these times. Please stop by at your preference within these hours if you wish to provide feedback. ( Location may vary by day and will be announced each day .) If you prefer, we welcome your concerns by email. Please send emails to Carol Hill at carol2002jean@gmail.com

Covenants

  • The discussions during these sessions are not confidential. The information discussed is public record as are any comments made during this time.
  • Avoid using language such as "I have heard many people say," "I can't say who said it, but...,"

  • If you have concerns outside of the Pastoral Leadership proposal, please write them down on the notecards provided at the tables.
  • All listen, one speaks.

TLC MARKETING E-MAIL
Sometimes your email box becomes filled with unwanted or junk email. You can mark it as “junk” mail and no longer be bothered by it, or “unsubscribe” through an option on the email itself. The same is true with TLC marketing emails, such as these issues of Transmissions, Meeting Reminders, Death and other special announcements.
However , in unsubscribing from just one of TLC’s marketing emails, you will be unsubscribing from ALL of TLC marketing emails. Because of the Federal CAN-SPAM Act, TLC cannot re-subscribe you by request without a somewhat complicated process involving authorizations.
While we hope you enjoy and benefit from our e-publications, important announcements and other timely information, we don't want you to miss out because you’ve unsubscribed from one that was not of interest.
