ENJOY A FEAST OF COMEDY AND MUSIC AS SUMMER WINDS DOWN

There is still much afoot in late summer across Dufferin County, including laugh-out-loud comedy shows, a wide menu of concerts ranging from classical to rock and country, and a weekend for movie-lovers at the annual film festival. So check out the options below and prepare to round out your summer with some superb and stimulating entertainment.

“FUNNY, YOU DON’T LOOK AUTISTIC”

AN EVENING OF COMEDY WITH MICHAEL McCREARY

Since Michael McCreary was celebrated in In The Hills as one of “25 under 25” local young people to watch, the self-described “AspieComic” has toured widely in Canada and the U.S.

Now, DAC is thrilled to be welcoming Michael and his wry wit home for an evening of comedy at the Orangeville Opera House on September 20.

Michael is an autistic comedian, actor, author and TEDx speaker who has been performing stand-up comedy and keynote addresses since age 13. Over the past ten years, he has performed in every province in Canada – plus the Yukon – and across the United States.

Michael has been featured on The National and on CBC Radio’s Laugh Out Loud! and he has acted in two TV series.

In 2016, he was the featured comic in Commander Chris Hadfield’s Generator show in Toronto. In 2022, he was part of the closing gala at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival for CBC. And in 2024, he performed in the All Access show at the Halifax Comedy Festival for which he was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for “Best Writing, Variety or Sketch Comedy.”

“Funny, You Don’t Look Autistic” is a stage play based on Michaels’s 2019 book of the same title.

Tickets $40.

P.S. ... just because we know you’re wondering, the above image of Michael has not been tampered with. Toronto Star photographer Carlos Osario caught the peak moment as Michael leapt into the lotus position.

NOTE: The original version of this newsletter incorrectly identified the photographer.

CALEDON MUSIC FESTIVAL –
TWO EXCEPTIONAL CONCERTS

The Caledon Music Festival is underway this month with two Sunday afternoon concerts still to come.

The first is at the Alton Mill Arts Centre on August 16. Titled “Transformation” after the theme of this year’s series, it features exceptional young Canadian musicians playing alongside the festival’s worldclass artists. The popular annual concert is the culmination of festival’s Side-by-Side mentorship program.

The festival’s “Grande Finale” concert is on August 23 at Westminster United Church in Orangeville, featuring violinist Luri Lee, clarinetist Eric Abramovitz and pianist Joonghun Cho.

JIM CUDDY IS BACK FOR MULMUR’S ANNUAL SUMMER JAMBOREE

For 21 years, iconic Canadian musician Jim Cuddy has headlined a concert at Lyric Pond in Mulmur, his home township, to raise funds for community projects. With hay-bale seating by the pond and fabulous local food, this cherished event brings together talented musicians, local supporters and community members for an evening of unforgettable music and warm hospitality.

At $250, an adult ticket rivals that of an urban stadium concert, but there’s no urban traffic to get there, the setting is far more intimate, and all funds stay in the community. This year’s proceeds go to the Honeywood Arena Renovation Project, the Honeywood Fire Fighters Association, and the Creemore Firefighters.

The Jamboree is on September 3. Order tickets from the Township of Mulmur.

FREE SUNDAY EVENING CONCERTS IN SHELBURNE

Fiddle Park has reopened in Shelburne after an extensive redevelopment, and the former home of the famous Canadian Open Old-Time Fiddling Championship is staying true to its roots with a summer of free Sunday evening concerts. Bring a picnic, bring your friends, bring your dog (on a leash), and settle in for a lineup that includes homegrown talent, such as the Matlockes and Tyler Reed, and tribute band The Almost Hip,  who masterfully channel the beloved songs and stylings of The Tragically Hip.

AUGUST IS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AT THEATRE ORANGEVILLE

Theatre Orangeville’s Young Company presents a murderously funny retake of the classic Sherlock Holmes mystery, as they navigate a dizzying web of clues, disguises and deceit, racing across the moors to undo the curse that dooms a family’s newest heir.
