Looking for a win, win, win in Angels negotiations

Last night, my council colleagues and I voted to allow a 14-month lease extension to Angels Baseball, keeping the team in Angel Stadium through the 2020 season and allowing both sides to work together on a new long-term agreement. I give credit to Mayor Harry Sidhu for reaching out to the Angels to bring them back to the table, and I thank him for bringing this item forward. I'm looking forward to this fresh start in negotiations to keep the Angels in Anaheim. I'm so proud to be a part of this process, and am confident that we will craft a deal that benefits not only the team, but the taxpayers and residents of our city as well. As I stated at last night's council meeting, this a complex negotiation with many stakeholders. Our residents deserve a process that's transparent, and this extension is prudent and allows for that. IMPROVING WILDFIRE EVACUATIONS

At Tuesday's council meeting, Anaheim Police and Anaheim Fire & Rescue held a workshop to discuss plans to improve evacuation routes and processes in the event our city faces another wildfire, such as the Canyon 2 Fire. I have made addressing this important issue one of my top priorities. As I shared in my remarks at last month's new council swearing in, I'll be asking our public safety departments to take a hard look at our response. Protecting District 6 residents is my number-one concern. During the presentation, staff acknowledged that the city "could have done things better," and gave as an example the lack of coordination with the Orange Unified School District and other local and state agencies, which led to confusion and clogged evacuation routes. I asked staff to ensure they are working with our neighboring cities and the county in a true unified command response. I also asked to see updated plans to assist our seniors and other vulnerable populations who may need assistance to get to safety. BRINGING NEIGHBORS TOGETHER

In a victory for District 6 residents, my office was successful in bringing together the neighbors of Mercedes-Benz of Anaheim. The dealership had proposed to expand and create a new stand-alone operation on Via Cortez, off of Santa Ana Canyon Road. With neighbors sharing concerns about the potential for increased noise and traffic, my office brought both sides to the negotiating table to craft an agreement mitigating some of the concerns and setting up a strict protocol for addressing complaints by residents. As a result, a planned public hearing on the issue set for last night's council meeting was removed from the agenda after the residents withdrew their appeal. I'm proud that both sides were able to agree to a future that benefits the neighbors and brings jobs and increased tax revenue to District 6.
