It used to be that you needed to remember to change your clocks for the onset of daylight saving. Nowadays, many clocks are smart enough to change themselves. We just need to be aware and try and keep up! Regardless, if you spend the lost hour sleeping in or if you start your day tomorrow the same as always, the time shift is one harbinger that spring is almost here!
We're seeing the signs already, from budding flowers to fabulously sunny days immediately followed by glum ones. While the extra vitamin D might get ya going, the clouds could send you looking for a book to snuggle up with. And while we can't stop the rain, we can offer a good read. Our A Literary Look series returns with a reflection on Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth—and the narrative's parallels to our own postindustrial communities.
For many folks around these parts, including your humble editor, another sign of spring is incessant checking of where the Pittsburgh Penguins are currently ranked in the division standings. The push for the playoffs is here—and you can join us and our rallying cry on March 26, when the Pens host the Canes at PPG Arena. Through the Pens4Purpose program, we are offering discounted tickets—and $10 from each ticket goes to support Rivers of Steel! Join us for some fun—and hopefully a much-needed W! Not a hockey fan, but still want to support Rivers of Steel? Donate to us directly.
Another sign of spring? Our events calendar has more things popping up as well. Join us for a variety of metal arts workshops in the coming weeks, including The Doodle Bowl Experience, a Hooks & Hairpins blacksmithing workshop, and a Hot Metal Happy Hour!
And don't miss our Things to Do in the Heritage Area selections. Register for tomorrow's Treasures in the Archives session at the Heinz History Center, or plan to attend The Children of Steel talk at the Carnegie Library of Homestead on March 23—both events are free!
