Tragic loss of a giant in our community: Congressman Doug LaMalfa

We lost a true original with the passing of Congressman Doug LaMalfa. Doug lived the values he stood for every day: hard work, humility, and a deep love for this region.

Doug was the kind of advocate people hope for. He cared. He called. He showed up. The photos being shared this week across social media say it all: Doug was visible, accessible, and present, not just as a congressman, but as a genuine friend to so many.

He never separated who he was from how he served. Doug called when my father passed away in the fire and he did a proclamation on the floor of the House for him. He had me out to the family farm and had me work, and he made damn sure that if you went, you WORKED. He even beat me in the pancake eating contest at the 2016 Silver Dollar Fair, taking second to my third-place finish.

That was who he was: genuine, down-to-earth, and deeply rooted in the land and people he served. Fundraisers in the family barn and casual meetings weren’t a style choice; they were who he was and what he believed - that relationships always come first.

My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Our community will miss him deeply. Rest in peace, Doug.

There is a memorial today, at 2:15 pm in the US House of Representatives. Click here to watch. It will also be on C-Span
