Last week, while Donald Trump threw himself a sparsely attended birthday parade in our nation’s capital, the rest of us were attending thousands of protests across the country—including 3,000 of you who attended the Chagrin Gateway No Kings event in Pepper Pike. The event, co-hosted with our friends with the Solon Democrats, Beachwood Democrats and Lyndhurst Democrats, was not looking promising at daybreak. Heavy rain and an ominous forecast had us wondering if we’d have anywhere close to the 900 people who RSVP’d. Then, 3X that number showed up and not only lined Lander Circle (in some parts three deep), but proceeded to stretch almost a half mile down Chagrin Blvd.
Our clubs are grateful to everyone who made this event such a tremendous success—but we are especially grateful for Pepper Pike Mayor Richard Bain, Councilperson Jackie Godic, the Pepper Pike Police and Fire teams, and the Community Emergency Response Teams who helped ensure that not only our First Amendment rights were protected, but that everyone was safe and secure.
For folks wondering about the condition of the young protester who was taken away in an ambulance after a large tree fell on a group of protestors along Chagrin Blvd, her mother reports that outside of some scratches and bruises, she was otherwise unharmed. Pepper Pike Fire/EMS arrived on the scene less than a minute after the tree fell across the crowd and Chagrin Blvd.
If you attended the event, please take a few minutes to fill out this post event survey to help us in our future planning.
If you left something behind at the protest, please scroll to the bottom of this email for a lost and found photo from the event. Then, email info@chagringatewaydems.com to claim your lost item and we'll arrange for a pickup.
Over the next month, we’ve got a number of events coming up—and details will be announced this week—but two events need your immediate attention:
First, if you’ve not signed the SB1 petition, please take a few moments today (Sunday) to stop by Morgan Park (Lander Circle and Chagrin/Pinetree) from 10am to 2pm where Kathryn Garvey will be collecting more signatures. The effort to get this repeal on the ballot is close…but we are not there yet. Please bring your family and friends. This will only take a few minutes—and could save Ohio’s schools from drastic and radical changes that will set Ohio back for generations.
Second, our July meeting date is moving from the first Thursday to Thursday, July 10. The meeting will start at 6:15 with our normal meeting updates and will be followed with the HBO Documentary: The Dark Money Game: Ohio Confidential. This is a fascinating film highlighting the rampant corruption of the Ohio Republican Party. Corruption that continues today. (RSVP for the July Meeting here.)
Finally, last night's events are exposing the dangers we face. Under Donald Trump's first five months, costs are out of control, unemployment is climbing, economic instability surrounds us, and one cabinet member after another showcases their staggering incompetence on a daily basis. Now, we're being drawn into a war that he hopes will distract us. Don't let it. Stay engaged and alert. And don't give up the fight.
