Combatting Classroom Censorship
Even in this last year, IDRA’s superpowers in research, policy advocacy, school practice and student engagement built our foundation to press for education that thrives in diverse, equitable, inclusive and culturally sustaining school environments. Here are some examples...
Acting on Research
For five decades, IDRA has worked hand-in-hand with teachers and school leaders to make classrooms both welcoming and challenging for diverse students. We know instruction must be culturally inclusive to be effective. And rather than limiting students’ futures, schools must be set up to provide every student rigorous courses that equip them to access college.
Informing Policy
This is why IDRA is fighting against the current classroom censorship laws and their chilling effects, like book bans. Such measures censor teacher speech, limit what students can say and learn about racism and current events, and attempt to whitewash history.
Supporting Teachers
In addition to working with educators to foster learning environments that are inclusive of students from dramatically different backgrounds, IDRA recently launched a new School Resource Hub with tools for teaching in a climate of classroom censorship. It is designed for educators, families and policy advocates, particularly in the U.S. South, who want to make sure students receive a strong, truthful education in our public schools.
Elevating Student Voices
In this work, we seek and lift up the voices of students to policymakers and school leaders. And we are listening to families and teachers who know their students best in order to have the greatest impact across the country.
Your donation will help us make sure students do not have to leave their identities at the school door when they arrive to learn!
