“I am so glad not to be virtual!” exclaimed honoree John T. Pellicone, MD, at the live, outdoors graduation ceremony of the Class of 2021 at Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center on May 27th. Graduates, faculty and guests at the 110th commencement were bathed in sunshine as they witnessed 72 NYCPM seniors receive their doctorates of podiatric medicine. Poster Day 2021 followed Covid protocols, but Zoom couldn’t suppress the quality of work displayed by the Class of 2022. Eileen D. Academic Learning Specialist
Erin Lynn is new to NYCPM and so is her position: Academic Learning Specialist. The College decided to establish the position as part of an ongoing process to support the best academic environment possible for students, according to NYCPM’s Academic Dean, Michael J. Trepal, DPM.

Trustee Reaches Out, Helps Others During Pandemic and Beyond
Trustee Susheel Bathla, DPM (’94) is doing what she was raised to do: give to/work for/serve others. With private practices in Staten Island and Trenton as her base, during the pandemic she provided podiatric services to undocumented immigrants living in Trenton, and has provided podiatric services and shoes to native Americans in the northern part of the state.

Dr. Iorio Zooms Podiatry Basics to NY Seniors and Diabetic Foot Talk to Ireland
Anthony R. Iorio, DPM, MPH, Chairman, Department of Community Health & Medicine and Dean of Continuing Education, gave a thorough introduction to the discipline and value of podiatry to an audience of over 100 seniors attending a Zoom session through Bloomingdale Aging in Place on May 20.
Dr. Iorio’s lecture and PowerPoint, provided for the topic, “On Our Feet: Advice on Aging and Foot Health,” delivered an abundance of information about the foot and lower extremity and about the medical specialty (and its subspecialties).
On June 10th, Dr. Iorio made a presentation via Zoom to the International Faculty and Staff at the National University of Ireland, Galway campus, during a seminar entitled Diabetic Foot Disease (DFD) from Prevention to Improved Outcomes (PRIMO). His discussion was “Hard to Heal Complex Wounds: Utilizing Placental Based Allographs (PBA).”

NYCPM Student Chosen to Join Research Team
Kayla Neville Obradovic (2023) has been selected by alumnus Dr. Norman Wortzman, DPM (’79), to join his research team at Massachusetts General Hospital. Before studying at NYCPM, Ms. Obradovic earned a master’s degree in applied analytics from Columbia University and worked at Columbia University Medical Center as a clinical research coordinator and analyst. Though she has not been assigned to a specific project team yet by Dr. Wortzman, Ms. Obradovic reports that she will be assigned and start on data analysis after she takes her boards. In the meantime, she has been attending weekly progress meetings on a variety of ongoing projects aimed at both retrospective review of treatment efficacy and prospective clinical trials for skin grafts, felt padding, and amniotic fluid injections.

Class of 2024 Shows Its Appreciation
In May, the Class of 2024 honored Academic Dean Michael J. Trepal, DPM and the whole Division of Pre-Clinical Sciences for “the efforts of faculty and administration in providing their [the students’] education this year under difficult conditions.” Students Milana Mayzlish and Chiara Mercado (left to right in photo) presented Dr. Trepal and Dean of Pre-Clinical Sciences Eileen D. APMSA Delegate is Voted Student of the Year
Lina Dobronevsky (2022), has been voted NYCPM’s 2021 Student of the Year. She will now move on as a finalist for the APMSA National Student of the Year Award and Scholarship. The APMSA delegate at NYCPM, she was elected by a vote of students and faculty. Ms. Dobronevsky is a regular tutor for many lower class students, and interviews potential NYCPM entrants. Alumni Obituary
Joseph Assini, DPM (’83) died in mid-May. After graduation, he completed a preceptorship at Lutheran Medical Center and practiced in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and Staten Island. He was the assistant podiatry residency director at Northwell Health SIUH, and was board certified by ACFAS and ACFAOM. He had relocated to Mississippi about nine years ago and worked at Greenwood Leflore Hospital there.

Alumni Obituary
Joseph S. Fox, DPM (’74), MPH shared some memories of his recently passed classmate, William Paul Jacobs, DPM (’74): Dr. Jacobs was a former ballet dancer for the Harkness Ballet Company who performed around the world with his wife Jeannie. After studying podiatry, he became an expert in injuries to dancers. He was on staff at New York-Presbyterian Columbia Hospital and practiced on the Upper West Side for over 35 years, within walking distance of Lincoln Center, where he treated many dancers. Nathan Castleman, DPM (’79), passed away on June 5, 2021. After graduation he completed his residency at a VA hospital in Kansas and founded his 38-year practice in Cumberland, MD directly thereafter. Source: PM News
