A loss at HAND of Santa Clara

As part of the HAND family, we know all too well how deeply loss of a loved one affects our lives. And so, we at HAND of Santa Clara are heartbroken to announce the passing of HAND's metaphorical mother, Nadine Silverstein, the morning of Friday, November 4, 2022, at age 85. She is survived by her lifelong love of 67 years, husband Sol Silverstein, and her living children Stacey and Jeff. She lost 3 babies between 1959 and 1962 as well as an adult son.

Nadine was devoted to HAND from its conception in the 1980s until her final days, as a grief meeting facilitator, lending library keeper, Holiday Craft Night leader, and board member. She collected art, readings, and mementos to share with bereaved parents at meetings.

Nadine will be sorely missed by all of us as we continue on as she did to serve families who've suffered the loss of a baby. If you're reading this message, it is likely that you were touched by Nadine during your own grief journey; we are so sorry for your loss.

We love you, Nadine.

We stand in a circle together, holding candles in the Mission Oaks cafeteria at the conclusion of another grief meeting. Nadine always starts us off, saying aloud the names of the children she lost.

We all say our beloved babies' names quietly in the circle. Today, the ritual is slightly different: we say Nadine's name as well, before we blow out the candles and whisper, "Good Night."
