Dear Englewood Schools’ Community,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of longtime Englewood teacher and coach, Randy Penn. Earlier in the week, Randy suffered a stroke and was unable to recover. He passed away with his family by his side on Thursday, September 3, 2020.

Randy was a pillar of the Englewood community. For four decades, he dedicated his life to the service of our schools and city. He started as a teacher in Englewood Schools in 1981, and coached various sports such as football, track and swimming until 2008. He then became the mayor of Englewood from 2011 to 2015 and recently retired as the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce. Randy’s legacy in our schools and community is boundless.

Our hearts go out to his wife Debbie, and his daughters Marcy Carlile, Kelly Prien (Matt) and Megan Walcott (Mike), as well as the rest of his family and loved ones. Several members of Randy’s family serve in our Englewood Schools’ community; two of his daughters and one of his granddaughters work for our district and schools. Randy’s younger grandchildren, Kyle, Brody, Maddy and Maycee are currently in our schools, and his older grandchildren, Bryce, Hayden and Sydney graduated from Englewood. Other family members are active volunteers throughout the city of Englewood. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.

For those who might need help dealing with this loss, please reach out to the principal and/or mental health providers at your child’s school. They can help provide support and resources during this difficult time.

This is a great loss to our close-knit community. Many lives were made better by “Coach Penn” and he will be deeply and dearly missed. The family is asking that any gifts in Randy’s honor be made through this link.

They will be establishing scholarships in Randy’s name for students in Englewood.

Sincerely,

Wendy Rubin, Ed.D.
