Dear MECDHH/GBSD Staff, Families, and the Greater Deaf Community,
As we mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded in Lewiston on October 25, 2023, I want to take a moment to reach out to each of you—families, friends, neighbors, and community members. This past year has been one of profound loss and reflection, a time when many of us have grappled with grief and uncertainty.
In the face of such tragedy, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by sorrow. But amid the darkness, I want to remind you of the light that can emerge from even the most difficult times. We have witnessed incredible acts of resilience, compassion, and unity throughout our beloved state. Maine’s spirit shines brightly, reminding us that we are never alone in our struggles.
Communities have come together to support one another, honoring those we lost while ensuring their memories live on through acts of kindness and love. The gatherings, the conversations, and the support systems that have blossomed are testaments to the strength we share. Together, we are building a future that reflects hope, healing, and togetherness.
As we remember the lives that were forever changed, let us also celebrate the strength of our communities and the bonds that unite us. It is our shared experiences, our willingness to listen and support one another that will guide us forward. We must continue to advocate for kindness, understanding, and action to prevent future tragedies.
Let us hold onto hope as we look to the future, knowing that each of us plays a vital role in fostering a safer, more inclusive Maine. Together, we can create a legacy of compassion that honors those we lost and uplifts our communities.
