A Message from the Producing Artistic Director

Dear Friend,

As you all know, our virtual coproduction of William Luce’s The Belle of Amherst begins streaming this Friday, April 2 and can be seen through April 6. It was a joy to work with Actors’ Playhouse, and exciting to watch Margery Lowe give such an inspired performance as Emily Dickinson. But what thrilled me most was working in the theatre once again and putting on a show.

The Belle of Amherst is our first theatrical production since Skylight closed in February 2020. That means we’ve had no revenue from tickets since then. During the past year, we’ve presented some 60 play readings on Zoom, through such programs as Drama(in the)works, the New Year/New Plays Festival, Contemporary Voices, and Home for the Holidays. We’ve also showcased more than a dozen interviews, the Young Playwrights 10-Minute Play Contest, and Dramawise online. All of it was free. We wanted to stay connected to you, and we wanted to provide you with compelling and entertaining virtual experiences while the theatre was closed and you were more or less confined to your home.

But now we’re looking ahead to our planned reopening in October, and we’re kickstarting things with this benefit performance. This is the first online event we’ve charged for, and all the proceeds will be split between PBD and Actors’ Playhouse. Tickets are just $30, and not only will you enjoy a great performance, but you’ll be helping us out as we rev up for the 2021-2022 season.

I also have a favor to ask of you: tell your friends. Some of you assumed this production is just for PBD and Actors’ Playhouse patrons. In fact, we’re trying to attract as large an audience as we can. So please get the word out to your friends far and wide, regardless of where in the world they live.

Thank you for your continued support of PBD.
