Church plant mission team has sights on Paris

Executive Director David Johnson talks with Charles Scheffe, pastor of The Church at Estrella in Goodyear, about the church's first international mission trip, which will involve serving with IMB missionaries during the Olympics in Paris.

IMB volunteer opportunities during Paris Olympics

Paris will host the 2024 Olympics. Opportunities will abound for proclaiming the gospel, and IMB missionaries and French Christians are preparing. The plans call for teams of volunteers from the United States to serve alongside them.

With IMB missionaries Tricianne and Caleb Spacht — whose home church is Happy Valley Baptist Church in Glendale — now serving in Paris, the hope is that Arizona Southern Baptists will join them as volunteers. Individuals and teams are needed to stay and serve with IMB teams for a minimum of five days during the weeks before the Olympics, during the Olympics or during the Paralympics. While applications are closed for the first two of the three weeks before the Olympics, dates are still available during the Olympics and Paralympics. The application deadline is March 31. There is still space for you!

Herman named AZMN director of chaplaincy

Ken Herman, who retired last December as the Arizona Department of Corrections director of chaplain and volunteer services, was recently named as director of chaplaincy for the Arizona Mission Network of Southern Baptists. This role entails bringing support and encouragement to Arizona chaplains serving in various capacities.

“Since chaplains serve in high stress environments, they need care and support as well,” said David Johnson, executive director of the Arizona Mission Network. “Ken not only knows what is involved in serving as a chaplain, but he also knows the people who are serving as Southern Baptist chaplains in our prison system. He has the academic and professional credentials to lead this work.”

Saxton, Quartzsite pastor, dies unexpectedly

Jeffrey Saxton, pastor of Quartzsite Southern Baptist Church in Quartzsite, died unexpectedly on March 10. He was 63.

“Pastor Jeff had a great heart for reaching his community with the gospel,” said David Johnson, executive director of the Arizona Mission Network of Southern Baptists. “Pastor Jeff planned and organized the annual outreach and revival to reach winter visitors who flock to Quartzsite every year.

“When the public school in Quartzsite closed, he led his church to open a Christian school for the kids in the community to attend. He served as the headmaster of the school and taught the Bible to students every day in a chapel service.”

Saxton leaves behind Karen, his wife of 43 years, along with six children and their families.

John Ramos

March 17-23

First Southern Baptist Church, Kingman, is the partnering church for the Christian Challenge chapter at Mohave Community College (MCC). Established in 1970, MCC offers more that 60 degrees and certificate options. MCC has held their tuition rate steady at $81 per credit hour, making it an extremely affordable higher education option for the people of Mohave County and the tri-state region. John Ramos, lead pastor at FSBC Kingman, is currently serving as the interim campus missionary along with two church volunteers. As a new chapter, they are learning how to connect with college students and develop Challenge Communities (missional small group Bible studies).

How to Pray:

  • For a permanent campus missionary to feel God’s call to join this team reaching this predominantly commuter campus.
  • For their two group meetings, one on campus in the day and one at the church during the evening.
  • For Pastor John as he leads his church to reach college students in western Arizona.

Jack & Rachel Thompson

March 24-30

Jack and Rachel completed their IMB training in September 2023 and are now serving in Johannesburg. Jack is using his accounting skills to provide financial help to missionaries in their Affinity. Although he is serving in an administrative position, Jack knows that whatever the task, God’s will is for all believers to share the Gospel and make disciples. In their “spare time,” Jack and Rachel are plugging in with the other missionaries in their area to share the Good News, make disciples and plant churches. Jack and Rachel were sent out from First Southern Baptist Church at Sahuaro Ranch in Glendale.

How to Pray:

  • That they might create life-giving rhythms and habits during their time on the mission field.
  • That they might maintain quality relationships both with new friends and everyone back in the States.
