A special message from the Executive Committee

of Massachusetts Interfaith Power and Light

Dear friends,

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the Trump administration is proposing to rescind the 2009 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Endangerment Finding. That finding has been a legal cornerstone for EPA limits on climate-warming pollution. The Clean Air Act requires the agency to regulate air pollutants when the Administrator finds that they “cause, or contribute to, air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare.” For decades, the overwhelming scientific record—and repeated court decisions—have affirmed that greenhouse gases clearly meet that test.

This is a moment of real consequence. MassIPL believes it is urgent enough that we must raise our public voices. As people of faith and conscience, we have both the freedom and the responsibility to speak into the public record about our moral, religious, and civic values. Pollution that harms our neighbors, burdens children, and damages the natural world is not only a technical issue—it is a moral failing. Each member of MassIPL’s Executive Committee has filed or will file a personal comment opposing this proposal, and we invite you to join us.

The EPA’s proposal does not reflect careful stewardship. It leans on a recent error-riddled report produced by five authors whose claims have been widely discredited by independent experts and stand against the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence. To discard decades of sound science in order to revoke regulations that limit climate-warming emissions is reckless, dangerous, unjust, and untrue.

But you can do something about it. In order to rescind the Endangerment Finding, the EPA must conduct a public rulemaking in which anyone may submit comments that become part of the official record. Please add your voice by visiting the federal rulemaking site using the instructions below.

Your statement will be posted on the government website and preserved in the permanent record. Every comment builds the record of public opposition, giving strength to credible legal challenges and bearing witness to the moral urgency of protecting our shared climate.

The deadline for comments is September 22, 2025.

How to Make a Public Comment on the EPA Proposal

Here is a quick guide for how to make a comment on the EPA proposal (“Reconsideration of 2009 Endangerment Finding and Greenhouse Gas Vehicle Standards”).

  1. Go to: https://www.regulations.gov/document/EPA-HQ-OAR-2025-0194-0093 or click the button below.
  2. Click the “Comment” button on the proposed rule.
  3. Write a comment. You also have the option to attach a file. Enter your email address. Choose Individual, Organization, or Anonymous.
  4. Click “Submit Comment.” Make sure you comment before 9/22/25.
  5. If you look at “All Comments on Docket,” you can read some of the comments that have been submitted. Follow the example of one that you like.

Imagine the power if hundreds of thousands—even millions—spoke up together. Officials would have to take notice. The media would cover it. Courts would see the strength of public opposition. The EPA might try to rescind the finding anyway, but they would know they face not silence, but an overwhelming chorus of resistance.

We encourage everyone who cares about environmental protection to file a do-not-rescind comment. Invite your house of worship. Tell your friends. Share on social media. Encourage your contacts to speak up.

With gratitude for your witness and action,

Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light — Executive Committee

With gratitude to the Green Team of South Church in Andover, a MassIPL member congregation, whose letter inspired this message.
