Dr. Michael J. Trepal (right) accepts the donation from Dr. Joseph C. D’Amico (left) that will help support NYCPM’s work in biomechanics.
Donation Aids NYCPM’s Work in Biomechanics
For the tenth year in a row – a decade! – a grateful celebrity patient of Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM, who was relieved by the doctor of his chronic heel pain, has made a significant donation to support NYCPM’s work in biomechanics. Dr. D’Amico is a professor in and past chair of the department of orthopedics and biomechanics at NYCPM.
_Specifically, the gift will support the school’s efforts to further the science and teaching of biomechanics through the College’s state-of-the-art Gait Lab and via its meetings dedicated to biomechanics. Dr. D’Amico chairs the annual Richard O. Schuster, DPM Memorial Biomechanics Seminar, which is also supported by this donation; this November, the seminar will be hosted by the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in Miami, FL.
_In addition, last year’s gift aided Samantha Landau, DPM, (2018), MPH’s specialized training in biomechanics, allowing her to function as a “liaison bridging the gap between surgery and biomechanics,” as NYCPM’s first modern Fellow in Orthopedics.

Research Led by Dr. Basu Published
Paramita Basu, PhD, Associate Professor Pre-Clinical Sciences, Director of Infectious Diseases, reported to the attendees of the Faculty Retreat (see separate article) that a manuscript on which she collaborated, on penicillin tolerance in group B streptococci, was accepted in a special issue of Vegetos, a Springer Nature journal, focusing on Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology.
_According to Dr. Basu, “This study was the result of over three years of hard work by my talented research students in TCOP (Touro College of Pharmacology), Hye In Kim, Faria Hoque and Weiqi Li, in collaboration with Dr. Yakov Peter, and two of his students from the Landers College for Men.
_Dr. Basu, says, “This work would not have been possible without the support of Dr. Henry Cohen, Dean of TCOP, Provost Amar, and that of Dr. Zvi Loewy, Dean of Research at TCOP and Dr. Piotr Kozlowski, Dean of Research at TCOM, as well as Dr. Michael Trepal, VP for Academic Affairs and Dean and Dr. Eileen Chusid, Dean for Pre-Clinical Sciences & Director of Institutional Research at New York College of Podiatric Medicine.”

Many dramas have featured calls for a doctor aboard an airplane. Last week. NYCPM’s Samantha Landau, DPM, MPH filled that role in real life. On board a Delta flight to Denver, Dr. Landau answered the call for a doctor and assisted a passenger having an emergency related to their Type 1 diabetes. Dr. Landau says she was happy to assist, is glad that the passenger is now doing well, and has received official recognition from the airline.
_Dr. Landau received her doctorate from NYCPM in 2018, received her DPM/MPH dual degree, and completed her residency at Metropolitan Hospital Center in 2021. She completed a fellowship at NYCPM in Biomechanics and gait-related disorders in the lower extremity in children and adults in 2022. She is full-time faculty at NYCPM and is an associate of Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM, DSc, a professor and past chair of NYCPM’s Department of Orthopedics and Biomechanics.

Alumni Join Walk to Fund Pancreatic Cancer Research
Each year, Arthur Gudeon, DPM ('60) marks the anniversary of his wife Sue’s death from pancreatic cancer with a 5K fundraising walk with Team Sue’s Crewsers at Jones Beach to benefit Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. This year -- the tenth anniversary -- very cold, rainy and windy weather caused the route to be shortened and abandoned early. Nonetheless, $3,000 was raised by the team, and donations are still being accepted at this link. In photo above, Drs. Arthur Gudeon left, and Andrew Shapiro, DPM ('86) at the Lustgarten Walk.
