New Foremast For Ernestina
SEMA has ordered a new foremast for Ernestina. The mast will be shaped at The Spar Shop, part of Grays Harbor Historical Seaport. Watch the fantastic video showing their tracer-lathe, the largest in North America.
We have already received $1000 donations from both the Onset Cape Verdean Festival Association and the New Bedford Harbor Sea Chantey Chorus.
You can make a tax-deductable donation toward the SEMA Mast Fund by sending your check to SEMA, P.O. Box 2995 New Bedford, MA 02741 or follow the DONATE HERE link to PayPal .

Shipyard Update
The inspections are nearly complete and the shipyard is waiting for the plank stock to replace the planks that were removed. Meanwhile, some seams are being re-caulked. More on website.
It is expected Ernestina will be back in her berth in early September. Here's a SouthCoastToday article.

Thank you, John Bullard
Welcome, Derek Stevens
SEMA's Board of Directors had some changes this spring. John Bullard has moved on to chair New Bedford Education Roundtable. We know John will always "be there" for Ernestina and were glad to see him cheering the Ernestina contingent in the July 2 Parade.
Newly elected Director Derek Stevens was born in Boston and raised in New Bedford. Derek graduated from New Bedford High School in 1993 and went on to pursue his B.S. in chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He continued his graduate education at the University of California, Los Angeles, receiving his C. Phil and M.S. in chemistry in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Upon returning to Massachusetts, Derek joined the Global Learning Charter Public School staff as Director of Technology. Married and the father of three, Derek resides in New Bedford and is a great-grandson of Captain Henrique Mendes.

| Rep. Cabral at Forum credit Frank Pina

Thank you Representative Cabral.
It's encouraging to see a revived interest in Ernestina from her stewards, the elected and appointed officials of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We look forward to the day when Ernestina can serve the people of Massachusetts as she has in the past.

this place matters
Thank you everyone that voted for us in the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Although we did not finish in the money because all of you "spread the word" it was a great way to make new friends for Ernestina. Next time!

Second Life
Do you have a Second Life? If you use Second Life, you would use this - SLURL (SL URL)
to take a voyage on Ernestina.
The idea and funding for the SL Ernestina was from Jim Bennette in coordination with his friend, Ernestina's former Captain and Executive Director Gregg Swanzey.
Of interest to some of you may be another project featuring Captain Paul Cuffee. |
