New algorithm can predict diabetic kidney disease

Researchers have developed a computational approach to predict whether a person with type 2 diabetes will develop kidney disease, a frequent and dangerous complication of diabetes.

“This new study provides a glimpse into the powerful future of predictive diagnostics,” says co-senior author Kevin Yip, Ph.D., a professor and director of Bioinformatics at Sanford Burnham Prebys.

Reviving exhausted T cells to tackle immunotherapy-resistant cancers

One of the biggest goals of immunotherapy is to reverse T cell exhaustion to boost the immune system’s ability to destroy cancerous cells.

T-Cells attacking an expanding cancer cell

Professor Linda Bradley, Ph.D., led a team of researchers who discovered a new way to make this happen—even in tumors that are resistant to clinically approved immunotherapies. The approach hinges on PSGL1, a protein found on white blood cells.

Can science mend a broken heart?

Your heart skips a beat. It could be love, but it could also be a symptom of atrial fibrillation (AFib), one of the most common heart problems affecting millions of people each year.

Assistant Professor Alexandre Colas, Ph.D., is working in the field of regenerative medicine to repair damaged heart cells. His novel approach could transform the way we treat AFib and help people who have had a heart attack live longer, healthier lives.

Join Dr. Colas and his team to learn more about how, with a little help from science, a broken heart can mend.
