Announcing a brand new class, perfect for beginners or any skill level and perfect for using up scraps!
The Bits and Pieces quilt by Kathryn Simel is by FAR our most popular pattern and it's not hard to see why. This pattern is a crowd-pleaser: a modern take on a traditional pattern, Bits and Pieces uses up scraps, it's quick, easy and fun (even for beginners!)and last but not least, it makes a wonderful guy's quilt.
Whatever fabric genre you love, Bits and Pieces is the quilt for you! Make it up in modern prints, solids, reproductions, batiks... anything! But there's another reason why we're in love with the Bits and Pieces quilt...
Bits and Pieces is designed by Kathryn Simel of Midcoast Cottage Design. Kathryn is not only our neighbor (she lives just up the coast in Cushing), but she's also our FAVORITE local designer. What a terrific opportunity to learn from the pattern author herself! Kathryn will be joining us here at Alewives Fabrics to teach beginners and experienced quilters alike how to make this popular quilt.
We can't think of a better way to spend a Tuesday morning!

Bits and Pieces class starts this Tuesday, January 31st and there are still spots available! Call us at 207 563 5002 to sign up!
And one last word about the Bits and Pieces quilt: On the Slow Sewing Cruise this past September, several of my fellow passengers brought along quilts. One of the quilts, brought by my good friend Susan Reif, was a Bits and Pieces quilt (pictured above in the photo, it's the quilt in the sun). Susan had fallen in love with the pattern when she saw the quilt hanging in our shop and purchased some solid white and a chambray for background fabrics and sashing. The "bits" and "pieces" were all made of Susan's Kaffe Fassett stash. Let me tell you, this quilt was STUNNING! The photo above is a most beloved memory for me and Susan's Bits and Pieces quilt is etched in my brain as one of my all-time favorites.

Here's a brand new fabric collection that would make an amazing Bits and Pieces quilt!
Sleeping Porch Cotton Lawns by Heather Ross have arrived!
Heather Ross is back with a brand new collection called Sleeping Porch, printed entirely on cotton lawn. While her collections are often designed with kids in mind, or at least grown-ups who still have a lot of kid left in them, this line was designed with the quilter in mind. The whimsical florals, friendly snails, elegant moths and a cute "fortune teller" print are sure to delight all ages.
As soon as Sleeping Porch arrived at Alewives, I brought a few yards home for myself and immediately turned them into new pillowcases. I can tell you first hand, these cotton lawns are a dream to sew with and a dream to lay my head on every night!
Sleeping Porch consists of 19 prints and 6 solids, all on a soft, buttery 45" wide cotton lawn. If you've never worked with lawn before, you're in for a treat! Lawn is traditionally used for sewing garments, and it feels thinner and smoother than a traditional quilting weight cotton. But don't be fooled! Even though lawn is thinner than a quilting weight cotton, it's also very strong and has a high thread count. These Sleeping Porch lawns would be great for a dress, blouse or children's clothing, but we think they'd be AMAZING in a quilt!
We have the entire Sleeping Porch collection in stock as both yardage and fat quarter bundles. I have a feeling they aren't going to last long. Get some of this delicious fabric while you can!
