"This month, medical students are walking through the doors of the new Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine building for the first time. They’ll see sunlight pouring into the atrium and classmates already gathered in study spaces. Down the hall, faculty and staff are settling into offices beside colleagues they’ve worked with for years but rarely crossed paths with on a normal day.
That moment will have been many years in the making."

Mentor Mixer brings physicians, residents, and alumni together with medical students for a unique micro-mentoring experience. In a series of brief, meaningful conversations, students can ask questions, explore specialties, hear different career perspectives, and build connections with physicians who have walked the path before them.
No long-term commitment required—just an evening of sharing your experience and helping a student envision what’s possible.
Volunteer as a mentor and make an impact in one evening.

"One of my favorite memories was the great friendships our group developed around the dissection table in the cadaver lab. The group included myself, Kimball Lloyd, Charlie Cox, Doug Kehl, and Judy Jones. We frequently sat together in the lecture hall and even met on the steps that led to the library to eat our sack lunches. The best outing we had was one afternoon when we hurried to finish our cadaver dissection and left the lab early. We drove up to a small stream near Heber and caught a bunch of trout. We then met our wives at Charlie's house, fried the fish and some potatoes, and enjoyed a fun dinner together."

Millions of neurons branch throughout our bodies, keeping them in close communication with our brains. This peripheral network begins to take shape long before birth, as the cells of a growing embryo move into position and adopt their specialized roles. This crucial stage of human development can’t be monitored directly, but by examining genetic clues that linger in adult cells, scientists have now gained surprising insights into the developmental origins of the peripheral nervous system.

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that affects an estimated 16% of people admitted to U.S. hospitals. University of Utah Health has been awarded $30 million from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to lead a large clinical study focused on identifying the most effective treatment for AWS. The study will compare phenobarbital, a newer treatment approach, with benzodiazepines, the established standard of care.
